Abstract:: This collection is comprised of two manuscripts collected by James Whitall. The collection includes the manuscript of a memoir or autobiography by Honah Landis, entitled "How Literature Came to Texas," and a French play by Edmond See, translated by Whitall, entitled "A Friend of His Youth."

"From the Wabash to the Delaware", Undated.

Abstract:: Thomas Raeburn White wrote this manuscript for his children and their descendants. The volume begins with a brief genealogical history of White's ancestors, who came from England or Scotland, and initially settled in the Carolinas. White describes how the family migrated to Indiana when his father was a child, in search of a more religiously tolerant community, and provides brief family history for his mother and father. White also describes his childhood, early education, Quaker experiences, college years at Earlham College, and business endeavors in adulthood.

"Transition from the Horse and Buggy Days to the Space Age", 1963 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The autobiography or memoir of Ruth Abbott Rogers is structured to act as a tour of the family home, called Quillity, outside of Philadelphia. In Rogers's words, "I will start at the top of the house under the slate roof and wander down room by room going over the accumulation of a family from colonial times in America." The manuscript therefore acts as both an autobiography of Roger's own life in the house, and as a family history.

"Recollections of my Life Time", 1887 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In the volume, George W. Taylor describes his family genealogy, his early education, his experiences growing up as a Quaker and a conversation he had with Elias Hicks, his career as a teacher in New York and Pennsylvania, and his business selling slave-free labor dry goods during the Civil War.

Joshua L. Baily account book, 1794-1915 (inclusive)

Extent:: 0.13 linear ft. (1 volume)
Abstract:: This volume was originally used as an account book, from 1794 to 1795, and was later repurposed as a diary or timeline of events, dated from 1826 to 1915. The section of the volume that acts as an account book includes an index, in which individuals are organized alphabetically, and entries record amounts paid or owned, the goods purchased, and the currency used. Goods listed are mainly dry goods and lumber, including: flour, "middling" (bulk goods of medium grade), hog feed, cornmeal, buckwheat, rye meal, and wooden boards. The second section of the volume acts as a timeline and diary for Joshua L. Baily. Included are entries concerning current events, such as terms of various presidents, the Orthodox-Hicksite separation, the emergence of the "Mormons" and their migration west, records of correspondence sent and received, and events in the Civil War and World War I.

Israel Howell Birdsall account book, 1810-1819 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Entries in the account book of Israel Howell Birdsall record amounts paid or owed, goods purchased, and currency used. Majority of entries include the purchase and sale of: oil, oil meal (used as food for livestock), flax seed, plaster, beans, apples, and butter. The volume includes an index, in which individuals are organized alphabetically.

Abstract:: This collection is comprised of the single volume letterbook of Thomas Wistar. The majority of the letters copied in this volume are personal correspondence between Thomas Wistar and various family members and friends. A few letters included are letters of sympathy from friends and family written upon the death of Thomas Wistar in January, 1876.
