Abstract:: Collection of original poetry written by and/or about Quakers, their beliefs, and their places of worship. Included are poems by Rebeca Smedley, Elizabeth Biddle Conrow, and Joseph Conrow, a biography in verse of Thomas and Elizabeth Robson by their grandson Joseph J. Green, a meditation on Spruce St. Monthly Meeting by Joseph Wharton, and an account of the 1843 Women's New York Yearly Meeting by Amanda K. Clark. Also included are poems concerning J.J. Gurney, Elias Hicks, and Robert Barclay's Apology.

Jenkins family papers, 1829-1854 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Papers of the Jabez Jenkins family of Pennsylvania, 1829-1849. Includes "On board the Packet Ship George Washington Capt. Holdrege Liverpool to New York 1833: Some Recollections of England &c." 1833, manuscript Recollections of travel in England and Scotland in 1833 by Jabez Jenkins. Jenkins stopped for a relatively short time in England, on his way home to Philadelphia from Canton. Observations were largely of architecture and industry in London, Birmingham, Staffordshire, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, and Edinburgh. His postscript reflects on the differences between Americans and the British. Also of interest is a manuscript entitled "Tea and the Chinese" detailed notes on the differences between varieties of Chinese tea and its preservation. The section of "Miscellaneous Remarks" is entered between two passages on tea, and includes observations on the government, education, class structure, and personal appearance of the Chinese. John Mott papers, 1822-1851 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Contains transcriptions of John Mott's letters to family and friends and journals, probably compiled to circulate in manuscript form. Also some original letters from John Mott to his family. Mott wrote extensively on his religious views, particularly on Quaker testimony and the issues of the Hicksite separation, as well as the conflicts within Genesee Yearly Meeting which led to the separation of Congregational (Progressive) Friends. Of special interest is a draft of responses to queries dated 1851 which refers to a discipline recently adopted by Friends.

Wing family papers, 1788-1857 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains journals and two commonplace books, business papers, and a few family letters. It includes a small journal written by a young woman (unknown) on a trip from New York City to Poughkeepsie, 6 month 1835; an album, 1834, which contains a list of the scholars and teachers at Nine Partners Boarding School, and an undated commonplace book containing copies of Quaker sermons and other writings. A Friends Pocket Almanac for the year 1857 contains brief notes concerning family events and Quaker meetings. Correspondence includes two letters from James Wing to his family and a letter, 1844 from M[oses?] Wanzer, Jr., of New Fairfield, Connecticut, to Joseph E. Macomber of Farmington; the two apparently had been classmates at Nine Partners School. Miscellaneous business and legal papers, 1788-1853, concern the Wing, Arnold, and Carpenter families.

Moses Pierce correspondence with George F. White, 1839-1926 (bulk 1842-1846) (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collections contains correspondence between George F. White and Moses Pierce in which Pierce asks White to clarify his views on abolition, temperance, and peace. White does not agree with abolitionists who want an immediate end to slavery, and he thinks that Great Britain's Abolition of Slavery Act was a ill-conceived. He notes the wretched conditions of factories and mines in England and Scotland as other forms of slavery. Pierce, in copies or drafts of the letters he sent, argues that the Society of Friends should take a stand against all slavery and disputes White's statistics. While the Discipline of the Society of Friends condemned slavery, the letters reflect opposing perspectives on how to confront the problem. The collection also includes a copy of White's travel minute to Great Britain and a letter from the Howard Pierce, donor of the collection.
