Felton family papers, 1839-circa 1922

Abstract:: The Felton family papers consist primarily of correspondence, telegrams, memoranda, and reports of Samuel Morse Felton (1809-1889) and his son Samuel Morse Felton II (1853-1930), both civil engineers who became prominent railroad executives. Samuel Morse Felton rescued the Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Philadelphia Railroad from financial ruin in the 1850s and made it into an important transportation route for Union troops during the Civil War. Felton also played a role in thwarting an assassination attempt on President Lincoln in February 1861. He went on to work for several railroad companies. Samuel Morse Felton II also forged a highly successful career in railroads, particularly with the Chicago Great Western Railroad during the late 1800s. Felton II was eventually named director general of military railways during World War I.

Abstract:: This collection includes letters written to Elijah Pennypacker concerning the anti-slavery movement. It includes correspondence from Abby Kelly and H.B. Stanton relating to the American Anti-Slavery Society, from Thomas Garrett concerning arrangements for transportation and placement of emancipated and self-emancipated people, and from William Still about a visit and lecture by William Wells Brown.

Abstract:: The Jenkinstown Lyceum (also known as Jenkins Town Lyceum) was established 1839 and erected a hall for its meetings on land donated by Mary Jenkins Ross. The Jenkinstown Lyceum records, 1839-2004, consist of minute books, financial records, histories on the Lyceum, and files belonging to various presidents of the group.

Dr. Russell F. Minton papers, 1909-1960 (bulk) 1839-1991 (inclusive)

Extent:: 2.5 linear feet
Abstract:: Dr. Russell F. Minton, born around 1900, was a prominent doctor in the Philadelphia area from the 1930s-1970s. Minton became a radiologist in 1940, and was involved with the merging of Mercy and Frederick Douglass Memorial hospitals. At Mercy-Douglass Hospital he served as chairman of the intern and resident training program, chief of the medical staff, chief of the Radiology Department, and Medical Director from 1949 until 1953. The Dr. Russell F. Minton papers, 1839-1991, bulk 1909-1960, contain correspondence, medical notes and reports, hospital records, newspaper clippings, speeches and articles, numerous photographs, Minton family genealogical items, and other materials. Many documents in the collection are associated with Dr. DeHaven Hinkson, another prominent African American physician in Philadelphia, and the reason for their inclusion with this collection is unclear.
