Oration by Henry Hartshorne.

Henry Hartshorne was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 16, 1823, to Joseph Hartshorne, M.D., and Anna Bonsall. He entered Haverford in 1836, and graduated in 1839. After graduation, he went on to get his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was from 1940 to 1945. With regard to Haverford, his post-graduate career was very decorated; he served as vice president of the Loganian Society (1839), president of the Alumni Association (1883), and alumni poet (1858, 1880, 1889, 1895). He also became a member of the American Philsophical Society (1863) and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Career-wise, he was a practicing physician, professor at Central High School in Philadelphia, professor in the auxilary medical department at the University of Pennsylvania, professor of organic science, physiology, and hygiene at Haverford College (1867-1871), professor at Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, professor at Girard College, and professor at the Medical Department of Pennsylvania Dental College. He also served as the editor of Friends Review (1873-1878; 1881-1893). Hartshorne wrote numerous prize-winning essays, articles, and poems. Outside of education, Hartshorne served as acting assistant (contract) surgeon for Hospital Service, USA (1862), attending physician at Philadelphia Hospital (1855-1856) and at Episcopal Hospital (1860-1862), and consulting physician at Women's Hospital in Philadelphia (1866-1876). He married Mary Elizabeth Brown on January 8, 1849. Henry Hartshorne died in Tokyo, Japan on February 10, 1897.
