Arthur Cartwright World War I photograph albums, 1914-1920 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection consists of three scrapbooks compiled by Arthur Cartwright, a British soldier who served in India under the 5th West Kents during World War I. It is unclear if Cartwright saw combat while serving in India, as many Territorial battalions spent the war on garrison duty and relieved the Regular battalions for front-line service. Indeed, his photographs mainly depict aspects of his life in a military camp and attest to the sightseeing Cartwright embarked upon throughout northern India and especially in Agra. Most of the photographs in these three albums are captioned.

Edwin Tyler Darby dental records and lecture notes, 1869-1887, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dr. Edwin Tyler Darby (1845-1929) was a prominent Philadelphia dentist and professor at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. This collection contains two books of dental records kept by Dr. Edwin Tyler Darby from 1869 to 1887 as well as a bound set of Dr. Darby's notes for lectures delivered at the Dental School of the University of Pennsylvania (undated).

Abstract:: This collection is composed of one volume of photos taken in India in the first decade of the 20th century. A majority of the photographs are of groups of individuals, which includes members of the mission, members of the Eurasian Boarding School, children in the boys' and the girls' orphanages, school children in general, and of the various instructors and reverends.

Neda M. Westlake American Literary Manuscripts records, 1970-1977 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Neda M. Westlake was named the librarian of the Rare Books Division of Van Pelt Library of the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. In addition to her library work, she worked extensively with the second revision of American Literary Manuscripts. This collection of documents consists of correspondence regarding American Literary Manuscripts, author lists indicating the authors present in the Penn collections, and inventory lists from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the University of Pennsylvania.

Harold A. Budke World War II photograph album of India, 1945-1946 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Captain Harold A. Budke was a medic in the United States Army, posted in Calcutta from 1945 to 1946. The photographs in his album document his experiences from his trip to Calcutta, to his service with the United States Army Dispensary, to his day-to-day experiences in the city, and to his work preparing the U.S.S. Marine Panther to transport GI's and patients from India in early 1946.

Abstract:: Howard Hospital was organized in 1853 as a charity hospital to provide medical care for factory workers who lived in the western part of Philadelphia. The Howard Hospital Records document the administrative activities of the Hospital during the early Twentieth Century.

Office of Athletic Communications Records, 1923-1951 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The University of Pennsylvania's Department of Athletic Communications, originally titled the Department of Athletic Publicity, was founded as a subdivision of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics on July 1, 1924. Its main duties, which have remained basically the same since its inception, are to act as a liaison to the media, to prepare press releases, to distribute press credentials for athletic contests, and to arrange interviews with athletes and coaches at the University. The Department of Athletic Communications Records primarily contains press releases and correspondence from the department during the period 1935-1951, with an unusually high concentration of material from the 1950-51 academic year.

Abstract:: While trying to secure the patent for the ENIAC, serious problems for the patent rights of John Presper Eckert, Jr. and John William Mauchly arose in the 1960's. The ENIAC Papers are divided into two major series, viz., one, Sperry Rand Corporation, John P. Eckert, Jr., and John W. Mauchly vs. Bell Telephone, Incorporated; and two, Honeywell, Incorporated vs. Sperry Rand Corporation and Illinois Scientific Developments, Incorporated.
