Abstract:
Le Sony'r Ra (1914-1993), known as Sun Ra, was a jazz musician and composer, band leader, and poet known for his avant-garde approach to music, association with Afrofuturism, esoteric beliefs, and the theatrical performances with his band, The Arkestra. This collection contains examples of artwork used for about two dozen of his albums, a series of photographs that offer a good representation of different periods of his life and work, and a set of promotional fliers, poetry, philosophical writings, and ephemera.

Stephen Berg was a Philadelphia born poet, professor, and editor who made that city his home for the majority of his career. A prolific writer and publisher, he was awarded several prizes throughout his lifetime including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Rockefeller Fellowship, Pew Fellowship, PEN Translation Fellowship, and the Frank O'Hara Prize. This collection includes poetry manuscripts and published poetry collections by Berg, many of them in annotated typescript, proof, and published versions.

The Ray Evans papers comprise materials documenting his career as the lyricist for the songwriting team of Livingston and Evans. The collection contains correspondence, sheet music, lyrics and scripts, press clippings, audio and visual recordings, photographs, programs, awards, memorabilia, and art work. Also included are personal mementoes, including some from his time as an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania.
