Abstract:
Founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1824, in honor of America's first scientist, Benjamin Franklin, The Franklin Institute is one of the oldest and most important science institutes in the nation. Its mission is to inspire a passion for learning about science and technology. The Historical and Interpretive Collections of The Franklin Institute subject files, 1792-1943, consist of files arranged alphabetically by subject containing a variety of primary and secondary-source documents related to each topic. The Papers of Georg and Max Bredig, 1891-1968 (inclusive) 1894-1944 (bulk)

Abstract:
This collection of mixed media contains manuscripts, photographs, publications, artifacts and works of art collected and owned by Georg and Max Bredig. The collection documents Georg Bredig's scientific training and rise to prominence as a gifted physical chemist in pre-World War II Germany. In contrast, the scope of the collection takes a dramatic shift after the Nazi rise to power in 1933. As a result of Bredig's Jewish descent, his scientific career and very way of life was brought to an abrupt halt. These documents describe the Bredig family's struggle to survive the horrors of Nazi-occupied Europe, to secure visas and offers of employment for themselves and their colleagues, and to ultimately emigrate to the United States.

Abstract:
Benjamin Champneys (1774-1814) was a college and medical student at the University of Pennsylvania (A.B. 1792, M.D. 1805) and, later, a naval surgeon on the frigate Philadelphia. This collection consists of three volumes of notes taken from lectures and reading over an extended period of time and bound together at a later date. The notes focus on the subjects of medicine and chemistry, with additional notes on logic, mathematics, and moral philosophy.

Chester G. Fuson papers, 1909-1963 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Chester Garfield Fuson (1881-1965) taught English, geography, and Bible studies at the Canton Christian College in Canton, China. He participated in a magnetic survey across Asia, and served as a teaching missionary under the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions from 1917 to 1949. The collection documents Fuson's life in China from 1909 to 1917, as well as his continued interest in the country from 1943 to 1963.

Abstract:
The Papers of Max Bredig contain manuscripts, photographs, publications, and artifacts which were created or collected by Max Bredig. The collection documents Max's early life and career in Germany and contains a large amount of family and personal correspondence. The personal correspondence shifts to predominantly professional correspondence after he immigrated to the United States in 1933. Max's career as a physical chemist at the Vanadium Corporation of America and later the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is well documented among these papers. This collection is an addendum to the Papers of Georg and Max Bredig located at the Science History Institute.

John Frederick Lewis collection of notebooks on mathematics and navigation, circa 1750-1810 (inclusive)

Abstract:
This collection consists of two volumes dating from the turn of the 18th to 19th century in London. The first volume is on mathematics with definitions and practical questions on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and logarithms. The second volume is on navigation and sailing and includes definitions, rules and exercises on navigation and sailing techniques.
