Abstract:: This collection contains family papers and correspondence of Enos and Hannah Sharpless including two copy books of the latter. The letters primarily concern family matters. Two documents of note are a letter from Johnson Knight concerning the Quaker testimony on slavery and a pass issued for an enslaved person bought by Enos Sharpless in order to be liberated.

Abstract:: This collection consists of documents relating to the withdrawal of Elizabeth Sellers from the Society of Friends and her subsequent disownment. Included is a letter from to Darby Monthly Meeting explaining her reasons for leaving the Society of Friends. In the letter she accuses Quakers of failing to take action on issues of temperance, pacifism, and abolition. Also included are genealogical notes on the Sellers family.

Hiram Doty collected papers relating to Quaker history, 1756-1874 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection includes original manuscripts collected by Hi Doty relating to early Quaker involvement in Indian affairs from 1756 to 1821 and the Friendly Association. Of particular interest are documents concerning the settlement at Oneida and the Treaty of Easton. Correspondents include Tedyuscung, Nathaniel Holland, Frederick Post, John Hunt, William Cooper, Israel Chapin, William Savery, James Pemberton, and Joseph Elkinton. Also included in the collection are several letters written by 19th century Quakers on a variety of topics. Among the latter are eight letters received by Joel and Hannah E. Bean.

Williams family papers, 1804-1863 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Contains family correspondence and some other papers of the extended Williams family, primarily from Esther and Benjamin Williams who were Philadelphia Quakers and from their nephew, Charles B. Williams, the son of Thomas Williams. Correspondents include Lippincotts, Warner, Roberts, and Dubre family members. Of special interest is a letter from Charles B. Williams, 1853, describing the vacationing habits of Philadelphians at mid-century. Also, a 1856 letter from Isaac Williams concerning the prevailing interest in spiritualism.

Mott Manuscripts, 1831-1898 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Lucretia Mott was a prominent Philadelphia Quaker minister and a leader in reform movements, especially antislavery, education, peace, and women's rights. She was born in 1793 in Nantucket, Mass., the daughter of Thomas and Anna Coffin, and educated at Nine Partners Boarding School in Dutchess Co., N.Y. In 1811, she married James Mott and they settled in Philadelphia, Pa. The Motts were active Hicksite Quakers, and Lucretia served as clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and traveled in the ministry. James Mott died in 1869, and Lucretia died in 1880. The bulk of the collection consists of material which was assembled at the time of the publication of Life and Letters by Anna Davis Hallowell in 1884. It includes original correspondence of Lucretia Mott and her husband, James M. Mott, with family and other reformers of their day. Also contains sermons, essays, and antislavery documents, and the diary of Lucretia Mott's trip to England to attend the World's Antislavery Convention of 1840.

Mordecai Matlack diaries, 1838-1887 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mordecai Matlack was a Quaker farmer in the vicinity of Byberry Township, just outside of Philadelphia. The majority of his diary entries describe Quaker meetings, social calls, and daily farm work.

Abstract:: John Shoemaker was a Quaker minister. Shoemaker's journals detail his religious visits throughout North America. Entries generally describe travel between destinations, families that host Shoemaker and his companions throughout their travels, and descriptions of Quaker meetings attended and Quaker families visited.

Richard Humphreys Foundation Records, 1837-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Richard Humphreys Foundation was created as the result of a bequest of Richard Humphreys (1750-1832), a Philadelphia Quaker who left funds for the establishment of a school for African Americans in Philadelphia. The school was founded as the Institute for Colored Youth. A group of Quakers, known first as the Association and after 1842 as the Corporation, oversaw the Institute. Actual management was performed by a board of managers who reported to the Corporation. The Corporation was successively known as the Corporation of the Institute for Colored Youth at Cheyney and the Corporation for Cheyney Training School for Teachers. In 1922, the State of Pennsylvania assumed control of the School, and the corporation changed its name to Richard Humphreys Foundation, with funds from the endowment to be used for promoting education of African Americans to become teachers. Bettle Family Papers, 1800-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Bettle family were prominent 19th century Quaker merchants in Philadelphia. Samuel Bettle, Sr., was Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting at the time of the Separation in 1827. His son, Samuel Bettle, Jr., was also a Quaker minister. They had at least five children, among whom was Samuel, Jr.; the latter married Mary Ann Jones in 1831. The collection includes correspondence, biographical clippings, business records, and other papers of Samuel Bettle and his family. Correspondents include William Savery, Jesse Kersey, Stephen Grellet, and other prominent Friends.
