Abstract:
Founded in 1873 in New York City and incorporated in 1890, the Young Friends' Aid Association sought to provide the destitute with the temporary pecuniary or material aid necessary to support them into financial independence. Substantial aid was given to unemployed fathers, the homeless, and widows with children, although scholarships and student loans were also made available on occasion. The collection includes minutes, lists of members, financial records, and a scrapbook of activities organized by the Association.

Friends World College Collected Papers 1957-1992, 1957-1992 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Friends World College was conceived as an accredited, co-educational, degree-granting liberal arts college combining a residence program with the opportunity for foreign travel and study. Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. The collection contains Mary-Cushing Niles's files pertaining to all aspects of Friends World College. Mary-Cushing Niles (1900-1993), a management expert and member of Stony Run Monthly Meeting, married Henry Edward Niles in 1923.

Anna Gillingham Papers, 1849-1962 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Anna Gillingham (1878-1964) was a prominent Quaker educator and author. She taught at Friends Central School in Philadelphia from 1901-05, was school psychologist in the Ethical Culture School in New York City from 1905-36, directed the remedial reading program at the Punahon School in Honolulu from 1936-38, and was a consultant on remedial reading after 1938. She also co-authored a book on remedial training for children with Stillman. She was co-founder of the Orton Society, a national organization promoting research and treatment of language disabilities. The collection includes correspondence, journals and other writings of Anna Gillingham. Also includes the correspondence of her parents, Theodore T. and Elizabeth H. Gillingham. Of particular interest in the latter are letters written by Theodore Gillingham while he was an Indian agent in Iowa and Dakota from 1881-1889.

Abby Hopper Gibbons Papers, 1824-1992 [bulk 1850-1892] (inclusive)

Abstract:
Abby Hopper Gibbons (1801-1893), daughter of Isaac T. Hopper (1771-1852), was an important figure in many of the reform movements of the mid- and late nineteenth centuries, especially abolition and her work with the Women's Prison Association and Isaac T. Hopper Home. In 1833, she married fellow Hicksite Quaker, James Sloan Gibbons (1810-1892), a member of the New York Yearly Meeting of Friends. Her daughter, Sarah Hopper Emerson, used some of this material as a basis for her 1897 biography of Abby Hopper Gibbons. The collection contains about 1,680 ALsS and related materials. Of particular note is the correspondence sent and received by Abby Hopper Gibbons, including family letters and and related to her work to assist Union Soldiers during the Civil War. Also includes letters from Union soldiers, prominent Americans such as Theodore Roosevelt, Joseph Choate, and Lydia Maria Child, and correspondence reflecting Quaker family life and concerns.

Circle of the King's Daughters, 1892-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Minutes and financial records for the "Here a Little, There a Little" Chapter of the King's Daughters, an international Christian philanthropic association. Records are dated from the 1892-1975, with gaps. While this New York chapter was primarily Quaker, the association itself was evangelical Christian in orientation, with Baptist and Congregationalist membership in other parts of the world. Members gathered to read Bible passages, discuss Lenten observance, and perform philanthropic work. The latter included donations to the Colored Mission and production of diapers and other garments.

Abstract:
Charles Thomas Hancock, II, was a Quaker historian and activist. He served as a CO in World War II and was a member of Scarsdale Monthly Meeting and later Mount Toby Monthly Meeting. He served as editor of a newsletter, the New York Young Friends Correspondent from 1949-1951. The small collection contains largely business correspondence concerning the Correspondent, with some older Quaker material for reference. The Correspondent was published from 1939 to about 1951, supported by tbe two New York Yearly Meetings. It focused on Quaker history and concerns, particularly peace, with news from other Young Friends organizations and yearly meetings.

Abstract:
Established in 1938 by the New York Monthly Meetings (Hicksite and Orthodox) at the 20th Street meeting house, the New York Friends Center was created initially to provide a meeting place for Quakers and to serve as a Quaker information and reception center in New York City. Lectures and social events were held. Sponsorship of service projects began in the 1940's. In November 1962, the American Friends Service Committee assumed responsibility for the programs of the New York Friends Center. The records document the activities and events of the New York Friends Center and consist of minutes, financial records, correspondence, newsletters and newspaper clippings, particularly of the Hiroshima Maidens Project, 1955 – 1956.

Abstract:
Formed in 1798 to give aid to the sick poor, the New York Female Association created the first public female school in New York in 1800. Until 1845, it worked with the Free School Society to establish and maintain public schools in New York while also continuing its efforts to help the indigent. Since 1845, the association has been a small gift-giving committee. The collection includes minutes and financial records.

Abstract:
Friends World College was conceived as an accredited, co-educational, degree-granting liberal arts college combining a residence program with the opportunity for foreign travel and study. Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. The College flourished in the 1960s counterculture environment, but ran into financial difficulties in the 1970s. While much of its support came from Quakers, in 1975 it became officially non-sectarian. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. The collection contains the records of Friends World College, 1958-1992, compiled for New York Yearly Meeting by George Nicklin; correspondence and legal papers concerning the transfer and sale of assets and the resulting lawsuits; topical files of George Nicklin; and his records on Pax Amicus, the group which opposed the merger and loss of College assets. Abstract:
This collection contains papers concerning conscientious objection collected by New York Yearly Meeting. Folder 1 contains a small amount of correspondence regarding COs in 1914 from Ulysses DeRosa, a member of New York Yearly Meeting (Orthodox); folders 2 and 3 contain largely correspondence, 1939-1946, concerning work with COs by the subcommittee on Conscientious Objectors of the New York Yearly Meeting Committee on Peace and Social Order, Joint Work-Camp Committee, and the Metropolitan Board for Conscientious Objectors which centralized the work of advising; folder 4 contains letters, 1939-1940, from Quakers affirming their membership in the Society of Friends and their belief in the peace testimony; folder 5 contains material concerning registration and draft issues, 1948-1970.
