Mary Larkin Thomas family papers, 1807-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:: A graduate of Westtown School (West Chester, Pa.), Mary Larkin Thomas (1886-1981) was a horticulturalist who was known, along with her mother and sister, in the area of Chester County, Pennsylvania as an "herb doctor." Thomas practiced herbal medicine; in particular, she used these skills to care for the infants of local Quaker families. She was also involved in numerous organizations, particularly Quaker associations. The Mary Larkin Thomas family papers, 1807-1981, include mostly correspondence, photographs, and other personal papers of Mary Larkin Thomas as well as papers of her immediate family members, in particular her sister Rachel C. Thomas and her mother Rebecca J. (Hallowell) Thomas. There are also some financial records of Mary's father, R. Henry Thomas.

Marion Bromley and Ernest Bromley Papers, 1920-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Marion Coddington Bromley and Ernest Bromley were active members of the Society of Friends, absolute pacifists, war tax resisters, and worked for racial integration in the United States. They are best remembered as founders of the Peacemakers, and as war tax resisters.

Kaltenbach Family Correspondence, 1933-1941 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection consists primarily of letters written by John E. Kaltenbach to his parents, Edward C. and Ethel Kaltenbach, from Wesleyan University, Yale Divinity School, and while working as the acting director for the Scattergood Hostel for European Refugees in Iowa. Also a small number of letters from his sister, Linda Kaltenbach, while a student at Swarthmore College.

Smiley family papers, 1885-1983 (inclusive) 1885-1930 (bulk)

Abstract:: In 1883, Quakers Albert Keith Smiley and his brother Daniel Smiley organized the first annual conference to discuss assistance to Native Americans at their estate at Lake Mohonk in New York state. These conferences were widely attended by specialists in various fields, as well as important officials. Only later were Native Americans represented. The concern to "uplift" was also directed at Filipino, Hawaiian, African American and Puerto Rican peoples, though attention at the conferences was primarily focused on Native Americans.

Elizabeth Gray Vining papers, 1897-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Elizabeth Gray Vining (1902-1999) was an author of children's books and served as the tutor to the crown prince of Japan, Akihito, from 1946 to 1950. The collection consists of correspondence, materials regarding books authored by Vining, articles, lectures and addresses, photographs, and information documenting her and her family's lives.

"Massacre: A Play", 1941

Abstract:: Charlotte Brate's play, "Massacre," describes a fictional event in the life of William Penn. It takes place in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1683, and describes the white settlers' fear of an "Indian massacre" and misunderstandings between the settlers and the Lenni-Lenape.

"Just Among Friends: The Quaker Way of Life", 1940

Abstract:: William Wistar Comfort's draft manuscripts of his book, "Just Among Friends: The Quaker Way of Life" describe the Quaker way of life, and the influence Quakers have had on issues of tolerance, peace, and economic and social justice. The manuscript includes Wistar's notes and edits, and the collection includes promotional materials related to the book's publication.

Abstract:: "The Reality of the Spiritual World," was originally a series of lectures given by Thomas R. Kelly in New York in the Spring of 1940, and given again at Pendle Hill and published in 1942. The volume includes reflections on the nature of God and the nature of the spiritual world.

Josiah P. Marvel scrapbook, 1940-1941 (inclusive)

Extent:: 0.13 linear ft. (1 volume)
Abstract:: The scrapbook of Josiah P. Marvel includes Nazi documents, such as certificates and letters, from Marvel's time in occupied France during the summer of 1940, while travelling to and from Paris in service to the American Friends Service Committee. Documents include permissions from Nazi commanders in France, as well as The Hague and Brussels. Also included is a map of the location of prison camps, clothing lists, and a printed booklet on the National Work for Infants.
