Abstract:: Walkabout Peace and Justice was first organized in 1985 in Davis, California, as an experimental project to provide a source of information for the peace-walking community. The group sponsored walks in support of issues related to peace and social justice; acted as a clearinghouse to provide information about other peace walks, mainly through its journal, Walkabout Peace and Justice. It's most siginficant organizer was Barbara Hirshkowitz, who later became a participant in New Society Publishers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Unitarian Universalist Peace Network Records, 1983-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Established in 1984 to strengthen peace work among Unitarian Universalists and interfaith communities, the goup was especially concerned with the international arms race and nuclear proliferation. Directors included Stephen M. Shick, Carol Powers, Stephanie Nichols. The headquarters were in Philadelphia, Pa. and sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association. Unitarian Universalist Peace Fellowship, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office, Unitarian Universalist Women's Federation, and the International Association for Religious Freedom; published two periodicals, Peace Network News and Nuclear Free Zone News; organized a Rapid Action Alert network to communicate concerns to elected representatives; ceased operations on November 30, 1991.

Mildred Scott Olmsted Papers, 1881-1990 (inclusive) 1907-1990 (bulk)

Abstract:: Mildred Scott Olmsted, peace activist and suffragist, was born in Glenolden, Pennsylvania, in 1890. In 1922, Olmsted became Executive Secretary of the Pennsylvania Branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF). From 1934 onward she assumed national positions with the organization. In 1946, Olmsted became National Administrative Secretary and held that position (until her retirement in 1966. She remained active as Executive Director Emerita of WILPF and also served on its International Executive Committee from 1937 until 1953. Mildred Scott married Allen S. Olmsted, II, in 1921 and the couple had one child and adopted two more. Mildred Scott Olmsted died in 1990 at the age of 99.

World Conference on Religion and Peace, USA Records, 1962-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In the early 1960s religious leaders, Rabbi Maurice Eisendrath and Dana McLean Greeley (Unitarian-Universalist) independently saw the need for national confernce on religion and peace. The organized the National Inter-religious Conference on Peace held March 15-17, 1966, in Washington, D.C., which brought together clergymen and laymen from all peace oriented viewpoints to discuss the relation of religion to peace. Minister and peace activist Homer A. Jack was also involved in organizing the group in the early years. In 1975 the group changed its name to World Conference on Religion and Peace (USA) to identify more clearly with World Conference on Religion and Peace (International).
