Abstract:
The Museum collections, initially displayed in the University Library in the Furness Building, were transferred to the new building in 1898. In the years that followed, the collections and the space available continued to grow and the Museum prepared both permanent and loan exhibits. The earliest Museum exhibits can be found in the records of the individual sections. An exhibit staff member was appointed in 1940; the staff remaining relatively small. Although exhibit catalogs date from 1892, few files were kept, and the photographic collections are often helpful in documenting past exhibitions. The files are arranged chronologically. Exhibit catalogs are filed separately (see Special Collections— Publications).

Linda Mather Collection, 1979-1980 (bulk) 1978-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1979, during her sabbatical leave from Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, Dr. Linda Mather took a trip to Pakistan to study the clothing of Pakistani women. Dr. Mather traveled through the city and rural areas of Pakistan taking photographs of the women and their clothing. The results of Dr. Mather’s study are compiled in a collection she gifted to the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Anthropology and Archaeology. The collection consists of correspondence, research activities, journals, exhibitions and photographs.

John Naylor collection, circa 1995

Abstract:
John Samuel Naylor was the son of Jacob and Anna M. Naylor and was born in Philadelphia on June 4, 1851. He owned Peoples Iron Foundry in Philadelphia and had an interest in photography and architecture. The John Naylor collection, circa 1995, includes slide indexes, notes and photocopies of Naylor photographs, and label copy from the 1995 Chestnut Hill Historical Society exhibit on Naylor.

Traveling Exhibits, 1983-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Penn Museum is a renowned center for archaeological exploration, teaching and display of artifacts from around the world. Since 1887, scholars and explorers have dedicated their lives to interpreting cultures from many areas. As a part of its mission the museum is also a sponsor of cultural, educational and social programs to bring exhibits of interest to audiences in the United States and around the world. In 1985, the museum inagurated a Traveling Exhibitions Program under the auspices of the Museum Services Division in an effort to expose the collections of the museum to a wider national and international audience. The Traveling Exhibits collection is composed of exhibition records from the inception of the program through the early 2000s. There are records from fifteen exhibitions plus the administrative and financial records of Kathryn Grabowski held in twelve archival cartons.

Abstract:
The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. From Thomas Mütter's collection, the museum grew as a noted repository for unique collections of medical specimens across the world. This collection of the records of the Mütter Museum span the years 1969 to 2009, although the bulk of the material dates from 1999 through 2006. The records document the educational programs of the Museum, including portrait tours, lesson plans, and the grants used to support them; two major exhibitions, "Only One Man Died" and "The Medical World of Benjamin Franklin;" and the renovations made to the Museum during the 1980s and early 2000s. Researchers interested in major renovations to museums and galleries and the ins-and-outs of grant funding for non-profit institutions will find this collection particularly rich in detail. Letters, manuscripts, photographs, portraits, postage materials, and other miscellaneous materials collected by Chester G. Fisher and Fisher Scientific Company. Most of the materials in this collection concern French chemist, pharmacist, and microbiologist Louis Pasteur. Most of the Pasteur items in this collection were used in Fisher Scientific Company's exhibit Pasteur Memorial U.S.A.

William Helfand (1926-2008) was a scholar of the histories of medicine, pharmacy and art, and a collector of prints and ephemera related to all three.
