Abstract:
Papers include correspondence of thirty-two members and relatives of the Hartshorne family. -Of special interest are the medical notes, articles, and correspondence, 1819-1845, of Joseph Hartshorne, M.D. These are noteworthy because of his many innovation in surgery, such as the use of animal ligatures, plus his detailed descriptions of treatments for various ailments. -The correspondence of Anna C. Hartshorne covering her missionary work in Japan -Henry Hartshorne's "Letters from Japan," printed in the Friend Review, 1893-1894, plus sermons, etc., given by him while in Japan with Anna, 1893-1897. -The bulk of the collection consists of the correspondence, medical papers, literary works, etc., of Henry Hartshorne, M.D., son of Joseph and father of Anna. -also include genealogical material on the Bonsall, Hartshorne, Saunders, Yarnall, and Cope families as well as photographs.

Abstract:
The Rush Family papers includes material from Benjamin Rush, physician, social activist, educator, writer and patriot; his brother Jacob Rush, lawyer, Supreme Court judge, and patriot; and Benjamin’s son James Rush, physician and Treasurer of the United States Mint. These American men were “strong characters, zealous patriots during the stirring period in which they lived, tenacious of their convictions and of the high standard of individual duty which they set for others, and typified in themselves,” (Richards, page 53). The bulk of the collection is the papers of Dr. Benjamin Rush and his son Dr. James Rush. Judge Jacob, John, Richard and William are represented, but to a much lesser degree. The other Rush family members are represented in a very limited manner. Philadelphia General Hospital Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum Committee museum collection records, 1730-1960 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum Committee was established in December 1940. The committee was responsible for the daily administration of the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum of the Philadelphia General Hospital. The committee attended to the maintenance of the museum building, oversaw the care and cataloging of museum pieces, and acknowledged donations to the museum. This committee reported to the Medical Board of the Philadelphia General Hospital. This collection consists of items, dating from 1730 to 1960, from the museum collection of the Osler Memorial and Blockley Historical Museum of the Philadelphia General Hospital. Present are letters, invitations, programs, reprints, photographs, a diary, and miscellaneous material relating to the history of the Philadelphia General Hospital. Dr. John Hanson Briscoe (1789-1855) was an American doctor and veteran who earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1811 and practiced medicine in Maryland. This collection consists of 11 volumes plus 30 leaves of lecture notes taken by John Hanson Briscoe while a student at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Department, from 1808 to 1811. Included are lecture notes from courses taught by Benjamin Rush on therapeutics, as well as courses taught by Benjamin Smith Barton, Philip Syng Physick, John Redman Coxe and others.

Abstract:
The Carpenter family papers include Brigadier General Louis Henry Carpenter's military papers and Civil War-era correspondence, as well as more than 200 years of correspondence, genealogical material, and other papers related to the Carpenter family of New Jersey. The Carpenter family was among the first settlers of the Philadelphia area and established several towns in Salem and Gloucester counties, New Jersey. They also had ties to numerous prominent families in the Philadelphia and Mid-Atlantic region during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. The collection offers insights into a variety of topics, including the Revolutionary War in the Philadelphia region; the early history of Haddon Township, N.J.; medicine in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; and life as a Union soldier during the Civil War.
