Abstract:: The Cox, Ross, and Robinson families were important Pennsylvania families active in early Philadelphia and Bucks Counties, and later in the development of Hatboro in Montgomery County. The Cox-Robinson-Ross family papers, 1669-1980, include letters, financial and property records, business papers, photographs, scrapbooks, architectural drawings, and research materials documenting several generations.

Constantine Hering and Calvin B. Knerr family papers, 1820-1940 (bulk) 1820-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dr. Constantine Hering (1800-1880), born and educated in Germany, immigrated to Philadelphia in 1833 and devoted his life to the study, practice and education of homeopathic medicine in the United States. As such, he is considered the father of homeopathy in America. Hering founded several schools and organizations devoted to teaching homeopathy, especially the North American Academy of the Homeopathic Healing Arts, aka the Allentown Academy, in 1836, and the Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia in 1848. Hering’s pupil and eventual son-in-law and professional assistant, Dr. Calvin B. Knerr, also practiced homeopathy. Knerr was integrally involved in the editing of two of Hering’s books and also devoted much time and effort to writing Hering’s biography, The Life of Hering. This collection primarily houses papers of Dr. Constantine Hering and his son-in-law, Dr. Calvin B. Knerr from 1820 to 1940. Bertha Van Hoosen papers, 1920-1950 (bulk) 1913-1971 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Bertha Van Hoosen (1863-1952), a doctor specializing in obstetrics and gynecology in Chicago, IL, founded the American Medical Women's Association. Her collection includes correspondence, journal articles, plans for a Medical Women's Library at Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, teaching material, images, and bibliographic material regarding women in medicine. A large part of the collection concerns Van Hoosen's interests in the National Medical Women's Association, later the American Medical Women's Association and the Medical Women's Library. There are also photographic images, x-rays and illustrations of medical case studies conducted by Van Hoosen.

Jeoffry B. Gordon collection of Medical Committee for Human Rights and Student Health Organization records, circa 1965-1970s (inclusive)

Abstract:: Jeoffry B. Gordon (born 1942) is a retired physician who primarily worked in California. His specialties included family medicine, public health and general preventive medicine, and medical toxicology. This collection documents, to a limited degree, Jeoffry B. Gordon's involvement as a medical activist in the late 1960s and early 1970s, especially in the Student Health Organization (SHO) and the Medical Committee for Human Rights (MCHR). While documentation of Gordon's immediate involvement is limited, the collection provides a glimpse into the world of medical activsm, more broadly, during this time period, through publications, newspaper clippings, journal articles, and newsletters.

Abstract:: Samuel Bellet (1902-1971) was a Philadelphia cardiologist who had an active career as a teacher, researcher, and clinician and was considered a pioneer in the study of arrhythmias. This collection contains a small group of material relating to his career and his involvement in the medical community in Philadelphia, as well as in the United States and in Israel.

Margaret Naumburg papers, 1912-1974 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Margaret Naumburg (1890–1983) was an American psychologist, educator, artist, and author. She was one of the first proponents of art therapy and utilitzed art as a method for both diagnosis and therapy. The collection contains materials documenting all the phases of Naumburg's long and productive work life. The materials include correspondence; copies of and materials for Naumburg's writings, lectures, and exhibit catalogs; materials for case studies; lecture notes for the courses she taught and papers her students wrote in those courses; and work by others that she collected and saved. Other media in the collection include slides, photographs, and audio recordings.

Abstract:: Frank F. Furstenberg was born in 1905 in Stockholm, Sweden, but lived most of his life in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was an allergist at Johns Hopkins Hospital and then Sinai Hospital. The papers of Frank F. Furstenberg, including correspondence, writings, and reference materials, pertain to Furstenberg's career in medicine and activism.

Robert S. Pressman papers, 1934-1985 (bulk) 1934-1985 1856-1996 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Robert S. Pressman graduated from the Temple University School of Medicine in 1946 and received a Master of Medical Science degree in Internal Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. Pressman served as an Associate Professor of Medicine at Temple University and as head of the infectious diseases section at the Albert Einstein Medical Center. He was a president of the Philadelphia County Medical Society and of the Pennsylvania Society of Internal Medicine. He also served as president of the medical staff at Albert Einstein Medical Center. Pressman was elected a fellow of the College of Physicians in 1955 and served as its president from 1984 to 1986. The Robert S. Pressman papers document Pressman’s professional role in various medical societies in Philadelphia, as well as his research and writings. Abstract:: Katharine "Kay" E. Reichert was an Air Force nurse who served with the Far East Air Force in Japan during the Korean War. After her return to the United States, Reichert earned her B.S. in Nursing Education from the University of Pennsylvania and then her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The bulk of this collection is comprised of photo albums and scrapbooks documenting daily life and excursions to destinations around Japan. Also included are official and personal papers and ephemera, yearbooks from Reichert's studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and artifacts such as medical bag and equipment, military insignias and honors, and door signs.

Abstract:: Vera Dreiser (circa 1908-1998) was a psychologist who practiced first in New York from 1947 to 1961, and later in California until her retirement in 1972. She is the niece of novelist Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) and of composer Paul Dresser (1858-1906). This collection is comprised of materials from Vera Dreiser's personal and professional life as well as materials related to the musical and literary estates of Paul Dresser and Theodore Dreiser.
