Abstract:: The Eric Matusewitch collection of Leonard Bernstein memorabilia, documents Matusewitch's admiration for the musician, composer, conductor, educator, author and humanitarian Leonard Bernstein. The collection contains articles, clippings, photographs, flyers, brochures, pamphlets, playbills, programs, calendar of events, posters, newspapers, invitations, sheet music, magazines, menus, advertisements, tickets, books, drawings, and scrapbooks of performances by Bernstein or of his work by other people or organizations.

Bernard Quaritch catalogs, 1922-2018 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Founded in London in 1847 by German émigré Bernard Alexander Quaritch (1819–1899), Bernard Quaritch Ltd. is one of the most influential antiquarian bookselling firms in the world. Quaritch has long played an especially critical role as agent for American institutions and collectors at London auctions. This finding aid serves as a guide to the more than five hundred Quaritch catalogs and bulletins published after 1920 in the Penn Libraries' collections. The collection is especially comprehensive from the 1950s to 2000s.

John Szwed collection of Sun Ra research material, 1935-2018 (inclusive)

Abstract:: John Szwed (1396-) is an American anthropologist and jazz scholar who wrote a biography of Sun Ra. Sun Ra (1914-1993) was an American musician, jazz composer, and bandleader known for experimental music and theatrical performances. The John Szwed collection of Sun Ra material measures 4.25 linear feet and dates from 1935 to 2018. It includes material related to Szwed's biography of Sun Ra, Space is the Place: The Lives and Times of Sun Ra and research on Sun Ra documenting his life, band, and music.

Abstract:: Holly McGhee is New York City-based author, agent, editor, and founder of the children's literature agency, Pippin Properties, Inc. The Holly McGhee papers measure 2.7 linear feet in four boxes and date from 1959 to 2018, with the bulk of the material dating between 1980 and 2018. The papers largely document McGhee's personal life, family, and career as a children's book author.Her work with Pippin Properties, Inc. is represented in the Pippin Properties, Inc. records, also held by the Kislak Center.

Laurence and Ayşe Gürsan-Salzmann collection, 1967-2018 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Laurence Salzmann (born 1944) is a photographer and filmmaker from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Over the course of his career, he has focused on social commentaries on little known groups in America and abroad, with a particular emphasis on the Jewish people in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. This collection contains a significant portion of the photographic output from Salzmann's long career. Researchers will find black and white and color photographs dating from 1967 to 2018; as well as other photographic, book, and film project documentation, such as book mock ups, exhibition publicity and planning, and biographical sketches of subjects of photographs. In addition to the physical prints, Salzmann also gifted digital copies of some of his prints which are available on Colenda (https://colenda.library.upenn.edu/).

Arthur Bloom research collection on Edwin Forrest, 1829-2018 (inclusive) 2014-2018 (bulk)

Abstract:: Arthur Bloom (born 1939), an author and scholar of American theater, studied and wrote a book on Edwin Forrest (1806-1872), a prominent Philadelphia-born actor. This collection contains research materials for Bloom's work, Edwin Forrest: A Biography and Performance History (2019). These include some limited original materials by and related to Forrest, extensive printout copies of newspaper articles about Forrest, contemporary scholarly publications related to Forrest and American theater, and other research materials.

Irene Eber gift of the Yedidya Geminder Memorial Collection of Sino-Judaica, circa 1940s-2018 (inclusive) 1970s-2010 (bulk)

Extent:: 13 linear feet (13 boxes) and 11.0 gigabytes
Abstract:: Irene Eber (1929-2019) was a scholar and professor of Chinese intellectual history and the Jewish community in China. This collection, consisting almost entirely of photocopies of her research, is a resource for researchers interested in the Bible in China; Chinese and Yiddish literature and poetry; Jewish refugees in China, and specifically Shanghai; and the Jewish community in China before, during, and after World War II. In addition to Eber's research, there is a fairly robust grouping of her writings, although not all are complete. The collection, named by Eber in memory of her father, Yedidya Geminder who was murdered by the Nazis, contains no information about Geminder.

Thomas Waldman research collection on Nadar, 1972-2018 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Thomas G. Waldman (1938-2018) was a scholar of the history of Medieval France and an associate professor of history at the University of Pennsylvania. He envisioned a book and exhibit on photographer Felix Nadar's autograph album, called "Nadar and His World," that would bring together the subjects of Nadar's photographs, their autographs, and biographical sketches. While the project was not completed, Waldman's research is available through this collection.

These records document the creation and development of the LGBT Center and the larger support of the LGBTQ+ community at Penn; the advocacy and influence of Robert Schoenberg and Center staff within the University of Pennsylvania administration; and the influence of global LGBTQ+ issues at the campus level at Penn and more broadly in academia.
