Harvey Denison Kitchel Micrographical Notes

Abstract:: Fascinating notations of an amateur scientist whose profession and training was as a man of the cloth who acquired a fine microscope and was very diligent in making observations of algae, mosses and blood of animals and humans. Reverend Kitchel made beautiful colored illustrations of his observations and consulted with others regarding his observations. He classed his observations as field notes. He and his family had a number of connections to Lehigh University.

William C. Bowie Scrapbooks, 1889-1929

Abstract:: Four scrapbooks containing miscellaneous newspaper clippings, correspondence. Each volume individually indexed. The materials in the scrapbooks are not arranged chronologically throughout: Vol. 1 1891-1937; Vol 2 1919-1937; Vol. 3 1916-1937, Vol. 4 1889-1939. William C. Bowie's career in scientific research in the theory of isostasy and its application to dynamics and structural geology is reflected in these scrapbooks.

Abstract:: A nineteenth century ledger contains example of calligraphy and extensive examples of arithmetic calculations in preparation for various trades such as carpentry, mercantile, roofing and masonry by Andrew Jackson Odenwelder of East Allen Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania.

Medical Practice Ledger

Abstract:: A nineteenth-century ledger illustrating the transactions of a combined mercantile and medical practice in Cumberland County (Pa.). The most of the ledger deals with costs of medical services and the mercantile goods available to the farming residents.

Correspondence and Printed Material about Gettysburg National Cemetery

Abstract:: The collection contains printed material, clippings and correspondence on the development of the Gettysburg (Pa.) Soldiers' National Cemetery during the American Civil War. Correspondence is mainly between John R. Bartlett, the Secretary of the Cemetery Commission and David Wills, President of the Cemetery Commission but other state representatives are also included.

Frank E. Ellwanger Commonplace Book 1906-1914, 1906-1914

Abstract:: An early 20th Century scrapbook containing miscellaneous household tidbits of knowledge, medical remedies, scientific inventions and mechanical observations compiled by Frank Ellwanger, a citizen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Personal observations and notations as well as articles clipped from newspapers, magazines and brochures are included. With its various recipes for making home remedies and references to do-it-yourself solutions, the volume compares to a receipt book or commonplace book of an earlier age.

Philadelphia Surveyor John H. Levering Ledger

Abstract:: This folio itemizes an interesting view into the northwestward expansion of the City of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in an era of growth in the mid-19th century. What is shown by the surveying entries is the incorporation, by the 1854 Act of Consolidation, of Roxborough Township and the Borough of Manayunk into the City of Philadelphia's 21st Ward. A list of landowners requiring surveying services reflects on Lehigh University's collection of 18th and 19th century industrial collections with client names such as Wetherill, Packer, Reading Railroad, Pennsylvania Railroad and the Schuylkill Navigation System. Also, a surprisingly large list of women landowners is displayed within the ledger entries.

Newspaper Caricatures about the Henry Ward Beecher Trial

Abstract:: A selective collection of newspaper caricatures, cartoons, sketches and portraits of the Beecher family especially related to the scandalous adultery trial in 1875 involving the Reverend Henry Ward Beecher and Mrs. Elizabeth Tilton. Beecher was the younger brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." The entire Beecher family was involved in the abolition cause. The collection of illustrations bound in this volume are an interesting evidence of the public opinion of the era.
