Abstract:

The Committee on College Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1935. Over the years, the Committee on College Collections worked closely with the Committee on the Mutter Museum; by 1939, the same Fellows served on both committees. The Museum Council of Philadelphia is the oldest and one of the largest regional associations of museums in the United States. Gretchen Worden was an avid supporter of local, national, and international professional organizations. She spent her career at the Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia and later joined the Museum Council of Philadelphia. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities, operations, and programs of various committees of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Museum Council of Philadelphia, and span the years of 1932 to 2006. Zachary B. Friedenberg letter, January 1944

Abstract:

Born in New York City on April 12, 1915, Zachary B. Friedenberg graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1939. He served in World War II as a surgeon in the 95th Evacuation Hospital, an advanced army field hospital, in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany and participated in three D-day landings. He was honored with the European Theater Ribbon, the Meritorious Service Unit Plaque, and the American Defense Service Medal. After his military experience, he went to the University of Pennsylvania, where he trained as an orthopaedic resident and fellow from 1945 to 1949. He then joined the faculty, where he attained the rank of full professor in 1970. In 1955, he was elected as a Fellow to The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Friedenberg was married to his wife, Kathleen, for over 30 years. They had two children. He died January 27, 2011, in Bryn Mawr, PA. Washington L. Atlee correspondence, 1851-1855 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Washington Lemuel Atlee was born in Lancaster, PA, on February 22, 1808. He began studying medicine under his eldest brother, Dr. John Light Atlee, at the age of 15. By 1826, when Atlee started his formal medical education at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, he had already attended over 40 obstetrics cases. He graduated from Jefferson in the spring of 1829 after completing two full courses of lectures. In 1844, Atlee accepted the position of Chair of Medical Chemistry in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA, where he stayed until 1852. He assisted in founding the Philadelphia County Medical Society, the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania, and the American Medical Society. Atlee was elected as a Fellow of The College of Physicians in 1846. Although a general practitioner, he was well-known for his operations of oviarotomy. He died on September 7, 1878, in Philadelphia. World War II ration book of Arthur Dannenberg, August 1943

Abstract:

Arthur M. Dannenberg, Sr., born in Philadelphia on 7 January 1891, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1913. He served an internship at the Jewish Hospital of Philadelphia — now the Albert Einstein Medical Center (AEMC) — and then volunteered for service in the Medical Corps of the United States Army. After his service, he applied for an appointment to a junior position in the pediatrics department of the Jewish Hospital, and eventually became the senior attending pediatrician and chief of pediatrics at the Northern Division of the AEMC in 1938. Dannenberg served as a consultant to a number of Philadelphia area institutions engaged in the care of children. His private practice increased rapidly following his appointment as chief of pediatrics at the AEMC and his involvement as consultant to so many of the social agencies in Philadelphia that were engaged in the care of children. Joseph Hines correspondence, 1854-1866 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Joseph Hines was born 25 December 1835 in Hardwick, Vermont, to Nathan Hines and Martha (Griffin) Hines. By the time he was 18, in 1854, he was working for a Mr. Page, selling patent medicine (pills) throughout Wayne, Bradford, and other northern counties in Pennsylvania. Later, Hines was a druggist and stationer in Athens, Pennsylvania; by 1884, he had bought the business from a Dr. H. L. Gibbs. He was elected burgess of Athens in 1894. Hines died 15 June 1917 from pneumonia. This small collection consists of 21 letters sent to various family members by Joseph Hines during the years 1854 to 1866. Hines wrote most of his letters to his sister, Maria, and his brother, Levi, and several to his parents. In his letters, Hines writes about the weather, his boarding rooms, people he encounters as he travels, and his customers. Records of the Committee for an Institute of the History of Medicine, 1974-1978 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The idea of forming an Institute for the History of Medicine at the College of Physicians was first proposed in 1966. In 1974, the President of the College, John Hubbard, put together a small committee to discuss the prospect of an institute for the history of medicine. The Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) was founded in 1976 to support research in the field of social medical history. In January 1977, Ronald F. Kotrc was selected as the first Director of the F. C. Wood Institute. As of 2018, the Wood Institute sponsors conferences, occasional seminars, and short-term travel grants to researchers who require the resources of the museum and library. The Records of the Committee for an Institute of the History of Medicine date from 1974 through 1977, and document the early beginnings of the Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine.

Abstract:

In 1917, Clement B. Newbold founded the Mary Scott Newbold lectureship fund in memory of his wife. Newbold was a member of W. H. Newbold's Son and Co. banking firm, and had donated to the College in the past. The Mary Scott Newbold lectureship was to "enable [the College] to obtain distinguished lecturers to address the College on subjects related to medicine or the allied sciences." As of 2003, the College was still hosting an annual Mary Scott Newbold lecture. The Records of the Committee on the Mary Scott Newbold lecture contain the Committee's reports from 1923 to 1930 and 1934 to 1938, as well as a transcript of the Symposium on Legal and Ethical Implications of the Non-Medicinal Use of Drugs, held in 1968.
