Abstract:
This collection contains the letters of Carter Nash, a Quaker inmate of a federal correctional institution in Texarkana, Texas, to Special Collections at Haverford College, regarding his religious beliefs and requests for books. This correspondence took place from 1999 to 2000. Eventually, this correspondence led to his publication of a September 2000 column in the publication Quaker Life. A copy of the column is also included.

The manuscript of Elaine Crauderueff's thesis for a Master of Arts in religious studies provides an overview of religious background of Quaker pacifism, including Quaker relationships with government authorities and the Peace Testimony of 1660. It also describes Quakers in the legislature, consequences of Quaker pacifism, and war taxes from 1750 to 1800, particularly those in Pennsylvania and in the colonies during the Revolutionary War period.

This history of Middletown Friends Meeting spans from 1686 to 1986, and begins by describing how early Friends in Chester County met in family homes, and the history of building the meeting house in 1699. The history describes the Middletown Meeting's reactions to various historical issues, including European American treatment of Native Americans and slavery and abolition. At the back of the volume is a Middletown Monthly Meeting Membership List from February, 1986.

"Hegel's Theory of Positivity: An Application to Two Quaker Sects", 1984 (inclusive)

Mark Webster's academic paper applies Hegel's theory of positivist Christian religions to two sects of Quakers, which Webster calls the Evangelical Friends and the Liberal Friends, and which Webster sees as the two least positivist Quaker groups. In the paper, Webster describes Hegel's theory of positivity, examines the history of Quakers through this theory, applies the theory to the two Quaker sects, and examines how different degrees of positivity in the two groups affected their reactions to the Vietnam War.
