Jennings-Clark-Eldridge Family Papers, 1768-1871 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Hannah A. Jennings was the daughter of Phebe (Glover) and John Clark of Gloucester, N.J. She married Levi Jennings, a bricklayer, in 1832. The collection contains correspondence (1805-1861), household accounts, and miscellaneous papers of Hannah A. Jennings, her husband, Levi Jennings, and her mother, Phebe (Glover) Clark Eldridge. Includes a manuscript account of a sermon by Priscilla Hunt at Merion in 1823, the renunciation of Maria Emily (Imlay) by Ann Jones in 1826, and letters discussing the Hicksite controversy.

Collection of papers concerning John Jackson, 1840-1900 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This is an artificial collection of papers concerning John Jackson, his spiritual teachings, and his religious mission to the West Indies. Included are essays by an unknown author, regarding John Jackson's views on Quaker ministry and doctrine as presented in his work"A Dissertation.. on Christian Ministry." An eight part manuscript entitled "Some account of the life and labors of John Jackson" is also unsigned. Also included is a bound volume of copies of letters written by John Jackson to his wife, Rachel, while he travelled on a religious mission in the West Indies with George Truman in 1840 and 1841. These letters describe the West Indies in detail and relate John Jackson's views on slavery and the difficulties they experienced as Hicksites. The original of one of these letters is also included.

George M. Justice Memorandums, 1825-1861, 1825-1861 (inclusive)

Abstract:: George M. Justice was a successful Philadelphia merchant and important Hicksite Quaker. Beginning in 1825 until shortly before his death, he kept volumes of memorandum reflecting his thoughts on religion, the Hicksite Separation and its aftermath in Philadelphia, family information, astronomy, slavery, and other topics.

Smedley Family Papers, 1751-1996 (inclusive) 1821-1950 (bulk)

Abstract:: The collection contains correspondence, journals and other writings, business and legal papers, and miscellaneous items of the Smedley family, a large and prominent Quaker family of Penncrest Farm, Middletown Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The family was related to the Kite and Sharples/Sharpless families of Chester and Delaware Counties. The papers include significant correspondence of the Kite family, especially Thomas Kite (1785-1845) and Mary Kite (1792-1861), both prominent Quaker ministers, and Thomas's daughter, Susanna Kite (1809-1844) who married Aaron Sharpless. Their daughter, Elizabeth S. Sharpless married Edward G. Smedley of Middletown, thus merging the Smedley-Sharples-Kite families. In the 20th century, the property became the home of Edward Smedley's nephew, Walter Smedley (1862-1939), a Philadelphia architect, and his wife, Ida Wilkins Roberts Smedley (1896-1993). Mira Sharpless Townsend Papers, 1815-1858 (bulk) 1806-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains papers of Mira Sharpless Townsend, a major Quaker social activist and reformer in Philadelphia. Mira Sharpless Townsend (1798-1859) was born in Philadelphia, attended Friends Select School, and in 1828 married Samuel Townsend (1800-1887). He was a member of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting by whom she had six children, only two surviving to adulthood: Emily Sharpless Townsend who married Powell Stackhouse and Clara Gordon Townsend, married William Penn Troth. During the 1840's, Mira Townsend became an active and vocal social activist who wrote and published a variety of poetry and articles which reflected her strong views regarding women, slavery, temperance and capital punishment. She also was the driving force behind the founding of the Rosine Association. Abstract:: The collection contains correspondence, journals and other writings, business and legal papers, and miscellaneous items of the Ferris family of Wilmington, Delaware, a prominent Quaker family. Of particular note are the correspondence and writings of Benjamin Ferris concerning the Separation in the Society of Friends, as well as the journals and diaries of Anna M. Ferris, David Ferris, Matilda Ferris, Benjamin Ferris, and Henry Ferris. Correspondents include William Lloyd Garrison, William Gibbons, Isaac T. Hopper, Joseph Bringhurst, Mary Gibbons, William Poole, Mary Biddle, Joseph Rakestraw, Halliday Jackson, and John Jackson. This collection includes a great variety of family correspondence that reveals much about the life of a Quaker family in Wilmington and of the reform activities of members of the Society of Friends.

Samuel M. Janney Papers, 1815-1880 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Samuel McPherson Janney was a Virginia Quaker minister, author, educator, and reformer. In 1839 he opened a boarding school for girls in Loudoun County. He traveled widely in the ministry, meeting with other denominations as well as being immersed in the contemporary issues facing the Society of Friends. Among his activities were establishing schools for African Americans and women, creating public schools in Virginia, and the abolition of slavery. In 1869 he was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Nebraska. The collection contains primarily correspondence of Samuel M. Janney with family and with friends such as John Comly, Joseph Dugdale, Benjamin Ferris, William Dudley Foulke, Isaac T. Abstract:: This collection includes letters of Benjamin and Jane Price, among their family and with other Quakers. Also included are letters received by Benjamin's brother Eli K. Price regarding his legal practice, and by Benjamin's daughter-in-law Lydia H. Price, regarding family news. Bound volumes of letters record the correspondence of Benjamin and Jane Price while one or the other travelled in Quaker ministry. Of particular interest are : letters of Edward Hicks, regarding the Hicksite controversy ; letters of John Comly, regarding Quaker beliefs, the worship of Baal, and the views of Edward Hicks; letters of Deborah F. Wharton on Quaker concerns in Indian affairs; letters of Dillwyn Parrish regarding Quaker involvement in the Anti-slavery movement ; and an account by Benjamin Price of an Elias Hicks meeting. Other correspondents include Thomas Garrett, William Wharton, Jane Mott, and William Ellery Channing, regarding matters of practical or business concern.
