Abstract:
Elihu Katz (born 1926) is an American Israeli sociologist and media scholar who has made substantial contributions to the field of communication, specifically in the areas of media effects, diffusion, uses and gratifications and reception, and media events. This primary portion of Katz's papers documents his scholarly and professional activities at the Guttman Institute of Applied Social Research, and Annenberg Schools for Communication at the University of California and University of Pennsylvania, respectively. Materials pertaining to the University of Chicago, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Israel Broadcasting Authority are also present, but less substantially so. The collection is divided into ten series and includes correspondence; drafts of talks, papers, articles, and books; research notes; conference materials; teaching materials and course documents; public opinion studies and reports; Israeli broadcasting materials; and biographical documents.

Abstract:
The National Bankruptcy Conference is a voluntary, non-profit, self-supporting organization of lawyers, law teachers, and bankruptcy judges who have achieved scholarly distinction in the field of bankruptcy law. Its purpose is to study the operation of bankruptcy and related laws and proposals for their reform. The Conference participated as a consultant to Congress in every substantial amendment of the Bankruptcy Act up to the 1970s. The collection includes minutes summaries of proceedings of National Bankruptcy Conference meetings from 1948 to 1996 and reports submitted by the Committee on Coordination of Uniform Commercial Code and Bankruptcy Act.

William Warren papers (Federal Tax Projects), 1943-1966 (inclusive) 1950-1956 (bulk)

Abstract:
The William Warren papers (Federal Tax Projects) consists of Warren's papers related to the Federal Income, Estate, and Gift Tax project and Federal Income Tax Statute. In the mid-1940s, the American Law Institute (ALI) set about to analyze the law as it related to income tax. Known as the Income Tax Project, the primary objective was not to codify the law but to provide analysis of issues as they related to the United States' increasingly complex tax code. The Federal Income, Estate, and Gift Tax Project (as it would eventually be known) consisted of a series of non-binding recommendations to students, teachers, litigators, and legislators as they dealt with the evolving tax code. The ALI attributes Warren as the Associate Chief Reporter on the Federal Income, Estate, and Gift Tax project. This collection does not contain material related to Warren's work beyond the ALI's Federal Tax Projects and is arranged in two series within 72 bound volumes.

Abstract:
The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. Former Penn Law Dean William Draper Lewis was the Institute's first director, running the organization's operations out of his campus office. The ALI was conceived as a representative gathering of the American Bar (including Judges, Lawyers, and Law Professors) for the stated mission "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work." The collection, 1922-2004, includes minutes, correspondence, reports, and related records regarding the activity of the American Law Institute's Executive Committee, Finance and Development Committee, Investment Committee, and Membership Committee.

Abstract:
Following the publication of the First Restatement of the Law, in 1936 the American Law Institute (ALI) held a series of meetings and published a series of reports that considered what additional areas of the law might be selected for future restatement projects. Work on the project continued into the mid-1940s. Many fields were considered, but only a few were actually selected for inclusion in future restatement projects. The collection, 1929-1968 and undated (bulk: 1929-1948), includes correspondence, reports, memoranda, and other records related to areas of the law up for consideration for future restatement projects, including business associations, industrial relations, and monopolies.

American Law Institute Criminal Justice Youth Committee records, 1935-1959 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1938, the American Law Institute (ALI) formed the Criminal Justice--Youth Committee to review the findings of a New York City study of criminal behavior among young people called "Youth in the Toils." The culmination of the committee's work was the Model Youth Correction Authority Act, a model act that favored the integration of a number of youth treatment processes already employed by various states. The committee also proposed the creation of a Youth Authority, a state-wide panel that would handle sentencing guidelines, with an emphasis on treatment and not punishment, for all underage criminal offenders. Following the Model Youth Corrections Authority Act's promulgation in 1940, the ALI appointed a special adviser, John R. Ellingston, to help states adopt Youth Authority legislation. This outreach effort was known as the Youth Authority Program. The Youth Authority Program lasted until 1951.
