Abstract:: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was one of the earliest pediatric hospitals to open a training school for nurses. This collection consists of materials relating to the Hospital, the School of Nursing, and the School of Nursing Alumnae Assocation. It includes administrative records, student files, and photographs.

Princeton Community League Visiting Nurse Committee records, 1924-1938 (bulk) 1924-1950 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Princeton Community League Visting Nurse Committee collection includes administrative, financial, and miscellaneous records, primarily dating from the 1920s and 1930s. The collection documents the growth and expanded services of the Visiting Nurse Committee, the relations with Princeton Hospital, and other individuals and agencies concerned with public health in the early twentieth century.

Alumnae Association of Mercy-Douglass Hospital School of Nursing records, 1939-1987 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection consists of two parts: records of the alumnae association in the period of Mercy Hospital and records of the organization under its present name. It complements the Mercy-Douglass Hospital records (MC 78) in that the latter are exclusively hospital and school records organically created before the hospital closed in 1973. The alumnae association collection contains historical accounts of the hospital and the school as prepared by the alumni, minutes of alumni meetings, programs of various kinds of activities the association sponsored, newsletters, correspondence, clippings, and material the association collected of other organizations.

Neighborhood Visiting Nurse Association records, 1900-1990 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Neighborhood Visting Nurse Association grew from the merger of several eastern Pennsylvania community and home health service agencies. These records document services provided to communities in Chester and Delaware counties during the 20th century. Materials include board minutes and reports, correspondence, photographs, financial information, and other administrative records.

J. Alden Mason American Section records, 1924-1964 (bulk) 1898-1968 (inclusive)

Abstract:: J. Alden Mason, noted archaeological anthropologist and linguist, was born in Orland, Indiana and attended school in Philadelphia attaining his A.B. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1907. He pursued his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley completing his dissertation on the ethnography of the Salinan Indians of California. Mason was influenced by Alfred J. Kroeber while at Berkeley and Edward Sapir of the University of Pennsylvania. The J. Alden Mason curatorial years (1922-1967) produced three archival boxes of correspondence and in-house memos, along with Section reports, research notes and articles and notes for publication. This material, in addition to personal records of Dr. Mason and evidence of his scholarship were arranged into series and placed in chronological order.

Mediterranean Section Curatorial records, 1895-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The curatorial files encompass the period from the Section's inauguration by Museum President William Pepper in 1894 to the 1970s. While the material in the Mediterranean curatorial files dates from 1895 to 1979, the bulk of the collection dates to the earlier years (1895-1949) and within that period, the majority relate to Edith Hall Dohan.

Henry N. Michael papers, 1938-2004 (inclusive)

Extent:: 6.0 cubic feet (4 records storage cartons of papers, 1 records storage carton of index cards and 1 records storage carton of visual materials)
Abstract:: Henry N. Michael was an anthropologist and geographer whose research on growth rings in ancient bristlecone pine trees allowed him to develop Carbon 14 calibration, or “correcting scale.” This scale helped to resolve problems in radiocarbon dating in archaeology. Dr. Michael also published a number of works translated from Russian on various aspects of Arctic archaeology and ethnography, along with folklore of Arctic people. Holdings include research and field notes on his trips to the White Mountains in California to collect bristlecone pine samples, testing of wood samples at the Penn Museum Radiocarbon Lab, and notes and drafts of publications and translations.

Rudolf Anthes Egyptian Section records, 1949-1962 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Rudolf Anthes, born in Hamburg, Germany in 1896, was a famed Egyptologist and Philologist who initially studied theology and oriental languages in his college and early graduate school programs. After serving in the German army in WWI, Anthes completed his Ph.D. in Egyptology and Philology at the University of Berlin. After WWII, Anthes was working as the Director of the Berlin Museum. However he was not happy with the policies of the new German Democratic Republic and the Penn Museum came to his rescue. Froelich Rainey and Ephraim Speiser asked Anthes to rejoin the staff as the Curator of the Egyptian section. The Rudolf Anthes Egyptian section records consist of one and one-half archival boxes of correspondence and administrative records.

Clarence S. Fisher Dendereh Expedition records, 1915-1918 (bulk) 1915-1949 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Clarence S. Fisher was born in Philadelphia in 1876 and attended the University of Pennsylvania, attaining a degree in architecture in 1897 but devoting his entire life to archaeology. His first archaeology field experience was as the architect for the initial Babylonian expedition to Nippur from 1898 to 1900. This was followed by a research fellowship in Babylonian archaeology at the University Museum. Fisher also worked as an assistant to Harvard Archaeologist, George Andrew Reisner in Egypt and Samaria. From Reisner, Fisher learned archaeological techniques and the methods of meticulous record keeping he would use in his later work. Fisher was appointed a curator of the Egyptian section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum by George B. Gordon in 1914. He spent the next nine years in the field collecting data in Dendereh, Giza, Memphis, and Dra Abu el-Naga.
