Abstract:

This album is a presentation photograph album given to Sir Malcolm Hailey, later 1st Baron Hailey, by Moona Lal and Sons, photographers. Hailey was governor of the Punjab from 1924 to 1928 and of the United Provinces from 1928 to 1930. The twenty-six photographs in the volume document the completion of the first stages of the works on the Sarda Canal, United Provinces (now Uttar Preadesh).

Abstract:

Little is known about the owner of this album, Alexander Fullerton Huston. Huston probably lived in Pennsylvania in the mid to late 19th century and possibly practiced law. This volume is dated roughly to the 1870s and contains engravings and photographs of European and American royalty, leaders, explorers, scientists, philosophers, and actors. It is divided into thirteen sections, each one being defined by a geographic region. Within these sections, there are engravings and photographs of the most influential people of that area presented in chronological order.

Abstract:

"Photographs of Costa Rican plants" is a two-volume album compiled by biologist Amelia Smith Calvert (1876-1965). Each page of the album features a black and white photograph of a plant native to Costa Rica, with up to a paragraph of type-written text that provides the Latin and common names of the plant, its appearance and characteristics, the specific location where the specimen was found, and the date on which the photograph was taken. Calvert conducted this research on a 1909 to 1910 expedition to Costa Rica with her husband, entomologist Philip Calvert.

Kanji Dwarkadas papers, 1914-1968, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:

The papers of Kanji Dwarkadas, an Indian politician and activist born in 1892, contain correspondence and writings by both Dwarkadas and some of his contemporaries, dating from 1914 to 1965. Active in Mumbai (then Bombay), Dwarkadas began his career alongside Annie Besant, Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the Indian Home Rule movement. Letters to and from these individuals and many other important figures in twentieth century Indian politics are included in this collection, along with a number of interviews conducted by Dwarkadas. Beginning in the 1920s, Dwarkadas was actively involved in organizations to promote social welfare in Mumbai, such as the Prostitution Inquiry Committee and Children's Aid Society (meeting minutes, resolutions and reports from these and other groups are included in the collection). Dwarkadas withdrew from politics in 1933 and focused his energies on labor organization and worker's rights.

William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera, 1736-2006, undated (inclusive)

Abstract:

The William H. Helfand collection of medical quackery ephemera contains prints that address the public perception of physicians and the practice of medicine across three centuries (1736-2006, with undated materials). A large number of cartoons from nineteenth century French satirical newspapers reveal that medical practices and symbols were used to visually express political sentiments. In this collection, medicine also emerges as a theme in imagerie populaire, inexpensive block prints mass-produced during the same period. Other aspects and eras of medicine are represented in the collection's portraits, advertisements, devotional images and artwork.
