Abstract:: Archie and Mary Hanlan are known for their writings, educational efforts, and research on thanatology. Archie Hanlan lived with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for two years before his death in 1973. During his illness, he wrote and taught about the experience of death and caring for the dying. This collection contains papers related to the Hanlans' publications.

Martha Emily Shaw papers, 1911-1929 (bulk) 1907-2011 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection consists of the personal papers of Martha Emily Shaw, Philadelphia native and graduate of the Training School for Nurses of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. This collection contains a volume of her lecture notes from 1911. Shaw served as a nurse during World War I at the University of Pennsylvania's Base Hospital No. 20 in France. Upon her return from the war, she became an active member of the American Legion’s Helen Fairchild Post #412. Her activities with the Post are documented in this collection's photographs.

Women’s Auxiliary of the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania’s Ward G (Children’s Ward) minutes, 1917-1927 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Ward G auxiliary was a group of women who met periodically to discuss the needs of children being treated in the children’s ward of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. These reports contain vivid narratives relating the circumstances of individual children and their families and the work of the department and its staff to provide social and nursing services to young patients in their homes.
