Carrie Chapman Catt papers, 1840-1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Carrie Lane Chapman Catt (1859-1947) was an internationally recognized suffragist, and political activist. In 1900 Catt succeeded Susan B. Anthony as President of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, and remained in the position for four years. Catt founded the International Woman Suffrage Alliance in 1902 and served as its president for many years. During the 1930's and 1940's she was active in working against the Nazis, particularly their persecution of Jews. The Carrie Chapman Catt Papers focus on the history of the women's suffrage movement, with material pertaining both directly to her and to the movement as a whole, and consists of a variety of materials including letters, photographs, political cartoons and memorabilia.

Katharine Sergeant White papers, 1928-1977 (inclusive) 1945-1977 (bulk)

Abstract:: Katharine Sergeant White, the first fiction editor of The New Yorker magazine, was born in Winchester, Massachusetts in 1892. In 1914, White graduated from Bryn Mawr College. She married her first husband, Ernest Angell in 1915, and with him she had two children, Nancy and Roger. After a divorce in 1929, Katharine married her second husband, New Yorker staff writer E. B. White. White's career at The New Yorker began in 1925 and continued until her retirement in 1961. As the first fiction editor of the magazine, White not only exerted an unparalleled influence on the course of the development of the magazine, but on contemporary American literature itself. This collection documents White's career at The New Yorker, the history of the magazine, and her retirement years in Maine, primarily through correspondence, her writings, and other materials.

Abstract:: Helen Herron Taft Manning (1891-1987) was the daughter of President of the United States William Howard Taft and his wife Helen Herron. Taft graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1915, was named dean in 1917, and rose to acting president in 1919. The Helen Taft Manning papers house the records of Helen Taft Manning. This collection, which dates from 1861 to 1992, with bulk dates of 1915 to 1974, consists of correspondence, writings, clippings, and personal objects from the Manning family.

Elizabeth Burroughs (Kelley) scrapbook collection, 1917-1985 (inclusive) 1922-1926 (bulk)

Abstract:: Elizabeth (Kelley) Burroughs is the granddaughter of the eminent late-19th to early-20th century naturalist-writer John Burroughs. She attended Bryn Mawr at the recommendation of the neighbor and family friend, Hilda Smith, who was then the Dean of Bryn Mawr. The Elizabeth (Kelley) Burroughs scrapbook collection is comprised of three scrapbooks created by Burroughs. The collection ranges from 1917-1985, with the bulk of the material being from 1922-26, and consists of much about undergraduate scholarships, the Christian Association, the Bates House, and other aspects of Bryn Mawr life in the 1920s.

Lois Linn Killough Buss scrapbook, volume 1: 1943-1947 volume: 1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Lois Linn Killough attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating with the class of 1947 with a degree in Geology. Killough remained highly involved in alumnae activities post-graduation. She married Onno B. Buss and had two children. Killough volunteered the Interfaith Human Relations Council and the Women's Program Committee. She worked for the Cox Travel Bureau (travel consultant), the Olson Travel Organization (tour conductor), and the Humble Oil and Refining Co. (evaluation geologist). Killough died February 11, 1998. The Lois Linn Killough Buss scrapbooks Killough's two scrapbooks. The bulk of the material in Volume 1 is from Killough's Bryn Mawr career, from 1943-1947. Volume 2 contains material from 1947 only.

Abstract:: Alice Gore King received her B.A. and M.A. from Bryn Mawr in Psychology, going on to found Alumnae Advisory Center, Inc. This collection contains 25 Bryn Mawr-related scrapbooks created by King. The collection spans from 1929-1970, and highlights prominent Bryn Mawr figures, as well as faculty and alumnae.

Abstract:: Alice Knepper Kuppinger graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1936 from the School of Social Work. She was involved in the American Red Cross, and traveled widely with her husband as part of his job in the Foreign Service. This collection runs from circa 1930s-1960s, and contains a variety of materials related to the American Red Cross and the Foreign Service.

Jane M. Oppenheimer papers, 1859-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Jane M. Oppenheimer was a biologist and science historian. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1932 with a degree in biology, later taking a Ph.D. from Yale in zoology. She taught biology at Bryn Mawr from 1938-1980, and also designed an experiment for NASA in the 1970s. This collection, which ranges from 1849 to 1981, includes various materials related to NASA experiments and some of Oppenheimer's class materials.
