Abstract:: The William Penn Charter School archives contain the financial, historical, business, and social records of the school, dating back as far as 1611. Documents signed by William Penn, Benjamin Franklin, and former Philadelphia mayors William Hudson and Edward Shippen, are included as well as a variety of school texts and memorabilia, which illuminate the traditions and history of the William Penn Charter School.

Joseph Scattergood diary, 1792-1820 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joseph Scattergood, an Elder of Green St. Monthly Meeting, was a signer of the first letter of concern by the Elders of Philadelphia to Elias Hicks regarding the doctrine he was preaching (1822). Diary entries describe Quaker meetings, social calls and family news, visits to family and friends in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, births, deaths, and marriages within the Quaker community, and Scattergood's work as a school teacher.

Friends' Institute scrapbook, 1881-1909 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The scrapbook of the Friends' Institute includes materials related to the Friends' Institute for Young Men, particularly for the lectures and events of the organization. Lectures focus on a variety of topics, including business ethics, party politics, early friends and their services in America, the idolatry of culture, and Siberian convicts. Also included are the annual reports of the board of managers.

Walter G. Heacock scrapbook, 1953-1954 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Walter G. Heacock's scrapbook is largely comprised of postcards of Quaker meeting houses collected by Heacock, along with typed descriptions of the meeting house featured in each postcard. The majority of the postcards are from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, though there are a few from other states and Canada. The volume also includes newspaper clippings related to Quakers and Quaker history.

Hettie G. Fenimore family correspondence, 1832-1869 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection consists primarily of letters written to Hettie Fenimore by her family, including her brother Jason, his wife Mary, their children, and Eliza Fell. The correspondence relates personal and local news. Also included are letters written by Hettie's mother, Amy, and a copy of a commencement speech given at Central High School, Philadelphia, in 1858 by her nephew, Frank. Frank's letters contain several of his poems and amusing anecdotes about Philadelphia in the 1850's.

Abstract:: This collection includes letters received by Anne E. Sheppard from members of her family, including her mother, Margaret G. Sheppard, and her cousins John W. Biddle, Martha H. Garrett, Rebecca C. Sheppard, and Mary M. Sheppard. Of these the most extensive are those of Martha H. Garrett, describing the daily life, education, and concerns of a young Quaker woman in Philadelphia in the 1860's. Especially interesting are her accounts of Freedmen's relief work and of her unorthodox practice of physical exercise.

Parrish family papers, 1662-1873 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Collection of family papers includes letters received by Abraham Scott, 1700-1704, a volume containing copies of letters written by George Dillwyn in relation to his wife's inheritance of part of the estate of Richard Hill, Hannah Moore, and Henry Hill, including a house in Madeira, 1799-1816, and an almanac with notations by Captain John Hollitt. Of particular interest is John Parrish's diary of his journey in the ministry from Philadelphia to Virginia in 1782. Also included are copies of letters to and from William Penn, a copy of a marriage certificate in a Quaker style between William Boin and Dido, a "negro woman" 1763, and other miscellaneous manuscripts.

George M. Justice Memorandums, 1825-1861, 1825-1861 (inclusive)

Abstract:: George M. Justice was a successful Philadelphia merchant and important Hicksite Quaker. Beginning in 1825 until shortly before his death, he kept volumes of memorandum reflecting his thoughts on religion, the Hicksite Separation and its aftermath in Philadelphia, family information, astronomy, slavery, and other topics.
