George B. Jackson (George Bement) Family Papers, 1694-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: George B. Jackson, Swarthmore College Class of 1921, was a New York Quaker businessman. A member of New York Monthly Meeting, he was interested in family history and compiled the collection which contains farm daybooks of his great grandfather James M. Jackson of Quakertown and the memoirs of his grandfather, William Morris Jackson, Quaker businessman, reformer, and Trustee of Swarthmore College. The collection also contains genealogical information on the Jackson, Bacon, Chapin and Morris families, as well as personal correspondence and other papers.

Association for the Care of Colored Orphans Records, 1822-1979 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Association for the Care of Colored Orphans, also known as "The Shelter," was founded in Philadelphia by Quaker women in 1822 to care for black orphans, both boys and girls, within a nurturing, home-like environment. In 1915, it relocated to Cheyney, Pa, and became a home for girls. In 1965, its name was changed to "Friends Shelter for Girls," and its mission evolved to serve as a home for teenaged girls. In 1981 it ceased to function as a group home and was succeeded by Friends Association for the Care and Protection of Children which functioned as an emergency shelter.

Female Association of Philadelphia for the Relief of the Sick and Infirm Poor with Clothing Records, 1828-1978 (inclusive)

Allen Family Papers, 1700-1954 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Contains the papers of the Allen Family, a Quaker family of Philadelphia and Delaware County, Pennsylvania, which traced its ancestry back to one of William Penn's commissioners. Includes papers relating to the Allen and related Breidenhart, Casdorp, Gibbons, Hubley, Jacobs, Matlack, and Samuel families. The Allen family papers contain extensive genealogical material, family correspondence, journals and memorials which provide excellent source material on Quaker family life in the 19th century in the Philadelphia area. Of particular interest are letters from Charles and Rebecca Allen to their children, several of whom were educated at Westtown School.

Anna Wharton Morris Papers, 1729-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Anna Wharton Morris was the youngest daughter of Joseph Wharton, prominent Philadelphia industrialist and philanthropist. She was a birthright member of the Society of Friends, active in prison reform and other social reform movements of her day, and was a profilic writer, primarily of short stories and essays. In 1896, she married Harrison S. Morris, Philadelphia author and arts administrator, and they had one child, Catharine Morris Wright. The collection includes her diaries and journals, maintained almost continuously from 1884 to 1956, correspondence received, her manuscript writings, and other miscellaneous materials. Of particular interest is material on the prison reform movement, particularly the correspondence of Thomas Mott Osborne. Other correspondents include Emily Sartain, Thomas Wallace Swann, J. Hiram Doty collected papers relating to Quaker history, 1756-1874 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection includes original manuscripts collected by Hi Doty relating to early Quaker involvement in Indian affairs from 1756 to 1821 and the Friendly Association. Of particular interest are documents concerning the settlement at Oneida and the Treaty of Easton. Correspondents include Tedyuscung, Nathaniel Holland, Frederick Post, John Hunt, William Cooper, Israel Chapin, William Savery, James Pemberton, and Joseph Elkinton. Also included in the collection are several letters written by 19th century Quakers on a variety of topics. Among the latter are eight letters received by Joel and Hannah E. Bean.

Abstract:: Contains family correspondence and some other papers of the extended Williams family, primarily from Esther and Benjamin Williams who were Philadelphia Quakers and from their nephew, Charles B. Williams, the son of Thomas Williams. Correspondents include Lippincotts, Warner, Roberts, and Dubre family members. Of special interest is a letter from Charles B. Williams, 1853, describing the vacationing habits of Philadelphians at mid-century. Also, a 1856 letter from Isaac Williams concerning the prevailing interest in spiritualism.

Mordecai Matlack diaries, 1838-1887 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mordecai Matlack was a Quaker farmer in the vicinity of Byberry Township, just outside of Philadelphia. The majority of his diary entries describe Quaker meetings, social calls, and daily farm work.
