Abstract:: Correspondence received by Mary and Joseph Post from 1833 to 1882. Also includes a letter from Elias Hicks to Willet Robbins, a letter received from the English Quaker minister, Martha Routh (1782), and a number of family deeds and other papers. Correspondents of Joseph and Mary Post include Anna Greene, John Ketcham, Amy (Kirby) and Isaac Post, Joseph Dugdale, James and Lucretia Mott, and Cyrus Peirce. Topics include the illness of Priscilla Cadwallader"modern" abolitionism, spiritualism and the "Rochester rappings," freedom seekers in Rochester, the Pennsylvania Yearly Meeting of Progressive Friends, Rowland Johnson, the ministry of Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Abstract:: This collection includes the minutes of the Longwood Yearly Meeting of Progressive Friends, as well as records of its Financial Association and its Representative Committee. Also included are some minutes of Kennett Monthly Meeting, from which the Longwood meeting split off beginning in the 1840s. There are detailed records of this split, including lists of the members who were disowned from Kennett Monthly Meeting for associating under the name "Progressive Friends." Minutes and letters written during this period, as well as later narrative accounts written by members, provide futher information about this split. The collection also includes many histories of the meeting, written and presented by members on the occasion of the final Yearly Meeting, which was held in 1940. A range of miscellaneous records, such as the Bible and hymnals used by the Yearly Meeting, are also included in the collection.

Abstract:: Samuel McPherson Janney was a Virginia Quaker minister, author, educator, and reformer. In 1839 he opened a boarding school for girls in Loudoun County. He traveled widely in the ministry, meeting with other denominations as well as being immersed in the contemporary issues facing the Society of Friends. Among his activities were establishing schools for African Americans and women, creating public schools in Virginia, and the abolition of slavery. In 1869 he was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Nebraska. The collection contains primarily correspondence of Samuel M. Janney with family and with friends such as John Comly, Joseph Dugdale, Benjamin Ferris, William Dudley Foulke, Isaac T. Hopper, Halliday Jackson, Dillwyn Parrish, Edward Parrish, Moses Sheppard, John Jackson, Deborah Wharton, Halliday Jackson, Barclay White, William Dorsey, and George M. Truman.
