Swarthmore College Physical Education and Athletics Department records, 1921-1996 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Some structured exercise program, physical education or "physical culture," has always been required of Swarthmore students as a condition of enrollment or graduation, from its earliest years into the 21st century. In 1888 Swarthmore College formed a Department of Physical Culture, now known as the Physical Education Department. The Swarthmore College Physical Education and Athletics Department records, 1921-1996, includes reports on the department, sports news releases, and other departmental-wide records; women's physical education logs and scorebooks from women's sports games; men's sports statistics; and programs, clippings, and score sheets from sports played by both genders.

J. Roland Pennock Papers, 1930-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Roland Pennock was a prominent professor of Political Science at Swarthmore College where he taught from 1932 to 1976. This collection contains memorial letters which were received by the college following his death in 1995; writings including journal articles, speeches, contributions to reference publications, and reviews of his books; and his papers concerning the College committees on which he served, including Educational Policy, Divestment, and Honors.

Brand Blanshard Papers, circa 1920-1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Brand Blanshard was a Quaker philosopher, writer, and teacher. He taught philosophy at Swarthmore College 1925-1944 and subsequently at Yale University until 1962 where he served as the chairman of the Philosophy Department. The collection contains primarily published writings and some correspondence and unpublished speeches.

Abstract:: This series includes the minutes and miscellaneous records of the Faculty, in both original paper format and microfilm. Abstract:: The Dean of Students oversees vital aspects of student life, including pre-major academic advising, career services, health and psychological services, residential life, multicultural initiatives, and social and extracurricular activities. The Swarthmore College Dean's Office records, circa 1871-2005, include correspondence files, meeting minutes, reports, clippings from the student newspaper ("The Phoenix") and other publications, and other documents pertaining to student life on campus and administrative matters with which past Deans have been involved. Swarthmore College Admissions and Financial Aid records, 1869-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: In the early years of Swarthmore College, applicants applied directly to the College President and the cost of attendance was $350 per year. In the 21st century, a separately staffed Admissions Office and an Office of Financial Aid exist to support these functions. This small collection, dating from 1869 to 2003, includes admissions blanks, lists of applicants, reports, and other materials that document Swarthmore's admissions and financial aid policies and procedures.

Abstract:: The William J. Cooper Foundation provides funding for lectures, exhibits, concerts, and performances at Swarthmore College. The Cooper Foundation Committee, composed of students, faculty members, and staff members, works with members of all campus constituencies to arrange events and residencies. The William J. Cooper Foundation Committee records, 1943-1974, consists of administrative files that primarily document the committee's efforts to select, arrange, and publicize events.

Phi Sigma Kappa, Phi Chapter Records, 1921-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Phi Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa was established at Swarthmore College in 1906. By 1991, it was abolished, a victim of mounting debt and student disinterest. The collection includes correspondence, 1956-1957, concerning the Chapter's pledging of an African American, the first at the College; other correspondence mostly concerning the mounting debt; and agreements and leases.

Abstract:: In response to an incident in which an African-American resident of the town of Swarthmore was denied service at a local barber shop, the Swarthmore College Race Relations Club conducted a race relations survey in the community and on campus in the 1950-1951 school year. The Swarthmore College Race Relations Club surveys, 1950-1951, is a small collection that contains the code and response of the community questionnaire, and several interviews and a card record of responses to the student questionnaire.

Friends Boarding Home of the Burlington Quarterly Meeting, 1898-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Friends Boarding House in Trenton, New Jersey, was established in 1898 by the Burlington Quarterly Meeting, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Hicksite). Its purpose was to provide an inexpensive, permanent home for aging Quakers and others. The Friends Boarding House in Trenton, New Jersey was laid down by the Quarterly Meeting in 1985. This collection contains the records of the Friends Boarding Home, established by the Burlington Quarter. It includes Board minutes, financial records, and miscellaneous papers.
