Oliver Family Papers, 1706-2018 (inclusive) 1830-1960 (bulk)

Abstract:: The collection contains the papers of the family of Wendell French Oliver, New England and Pennsylvania Wilburite Quakers. Gamaliel Wallis Oliver (1772-1849) was a successful Lynn, Massachusetts, shoe manufacturer who married Charlotte Breed in 1807. Two grandsons, Wendell French Oliver and William Theodore Oliver, were conscientious objectors in WWI and served with the AFSC in European Reconstruction. The collection includes journals, photographs, and related papers of Wendell, W. Theodore, and Theodore's wife, Sarah Wood Oliver, a member of Perry City Monthly Meeting. Also a small amount of correspondence, a journal kept by Freelove Owen Pyle, 1909-1920, and genealogical and miscellaneous papers of the Satterthwaite and Buzby families of New Jersey and the Lane family of New York State. In addition to the WWI conscientious objectors material, of special interest are a letter from Quaker minister Mehetabel Jenkins and a letter from William Lloyd Garrison. Adelaide Hallock Wood family papers, 1746-2017 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains materials which descended in the family of Daniel Wood (1729-1773), Quakers of Bristol, Massachusetts, and New York State. It includes family bibles with annotations, an essay book kept by Adelaide Hallock Wood when a student at the Oakwood School, genealogical research on the Wood and Hallock families, transcripts, notes, and a small number of family photographs.

Alfred Parrish family papers, 1851-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Business letter books, estate papers, and personal correspondence of Alfred Parrish (1848-1921). He and his brother Dillwyn Parrish were involved with tramway (trolley) development internationally. A birthright Quaker from Philadelphia, Alfred Parrish left the United States in 1879 and spent the remainder of his life in Europe, mostly England and Italy. His daughter, Gladys Parrish Huntington, was a well-known novelist.

Elizabeth Cunningham family papers, 1914-2009 (inclusive) 1950-1968 (bulk)

Abstract:: Elizabeth Cunningham (1934-2020) was a Quaker who held administrative positions at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting in the 1980s and 1990s. He husband William Cunningham (1930-2019) was a philosophy professor at Cheyney University. This collection documents the couple's lives, as well as that of Elizabeth's mother Jennie Ault, with a focus on the 1950s and 1960s.

Friends Historical Library collection of Quaker organizations' annual reports, 1800-2000 (bulk)

Abstract:: This collection consists of annual reports (and some other publications) issued by philanthropic groups, schools and other organizations that were either started by Quakers, included many Quakers in their administration, and/or appealed to Quakers. The reports were collected at various times from various sources, and are sorted by organization.

Thomas family papers, 1885-1963 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The collection contains correspondence, a guest book, 1914-1939, kept by Edward and Margaret Thomas, and miscellaneous writings. Family correspondence includes letters from and received by Rebecca M. and Allen C. Thomas, 1885-1888 and 1902, and childhood correspondence of Edward Thomas, 1887-1892, together with his student transcript from Haverford College, 1897. A letter to Allen Thomas from biblical scholar James Rendel Harris, dated Feb. 16, 1889, Jerusalem, describes his visit and collecting in that city. Writings include Edward Thomas's brief history of Twentieth Street Meeting, New York City, with additions.

Don Yoder research papers, 1873-2010 (inclusive) 1940-1990 (bulk)

Abstract:: Donald M. Yoder (1921-2015) was a prominent scholar, folklorist, and author specializing in Pennsylvania folklife, recognized for establishing the term "folklife" in American academics. His primary focus was on Pennsvlvania German folklife, but he also had an interest in traditional Quaker culture and arts (meeting house architecture, dolls and crafts, etc.), in part due to his genealogy as part of the Quaker Wickersham family. This collection contains personal, professional, and genealogical research papers of Don Yoder, especially those relating to Quaker matters. Included are correspondence, Yoder's writings and research relating to Quaker social life and customs, and genealogical research, particularly Wickersham family genealogy and research materials.

Anne J. Perkins Diaries, 1939-2009 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Anne Jackson Perkins was born May 10, 1925, and died June 7, 2010. She attended Swarthmore High School, and later Guilford College and the University of Delaware, though she did not complete her bachelor's degree. She worked as a librarian at Swarthmore College's McCabe Library until she retired in 1988, and lived with her mother and sister until the ends of their lives. She never married, and her diaries often talk about romance, loneliness, mental and physical illness, dislike of family and coworkers, and the minutiae of daily life. The diaries have also been read and annotated by Anne's surviving family. This collection contains a few photographs of Anne, Nore, and their home.
