Abstract:: The Thornton Oakley collection of Howard Pyle and his students covers the influential artistic career of Howard Pyle and several of his students, most notably Maxfield Parrish, Violet Oakley, and N.C. Wyeth. The collection includes a wide range of materials, which was collected and assembled by Pyle’s former student Thornton Oakley. There are tear sheets of artwork published in magazines, original illustrations, photographs, research notes, manuscripts, and correspondence. Besides Howard Pyle, artists well represented in this collection include Elizabeth Shippen Green, Jessie Wilcox Smith, George Harding, Violet Oakley, N.C. Wyeth, and a large collection of material on Maxfield Parrish. Albert LeCoff early records of The Center for Art in Wood, 1982-2008 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Albert LeCoff (born 1950) is a co-founder and the Executive Director of The Center for Art in Wood (formerly known as the Wood Turning Center) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Since the mid 1970s, Albert has worked to promote the art of woodturning, woodworking, and the artists involved in these pursuits through developing programs at the Center, organizing conferences and exhibitions across the United States, and lecturing internationally. The Albert LeCoff early records of the Center for Art in Wood, 1982-2008, consist largely of slides of artworks and other materials that pertain to exhibitions, conferences, and symposia. To a lesser extent there are administrative and publicity materials relating to the early administration of the Center; photographs; printed materials; ephemera; and correspondence.

Glass plate negatives of Frank Taylor drawings, circa 1860-1926

Abstract:: Frank Hamilton Taylor (1846-1927) owned a lithography firm and served as a special artist for various newspapers and publications in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He wrote for several guidebooks and publications, but is best known for his drawings of Philadelphia published as Ever-Changing Philadelphia and Old Philadelphia in the 1910s. The Glass plate negatives of Frank Taylor drawings, circa 1860-1926, consist of nearly 250 full-plate glass negatives of sketches drawn by Taylor, mostly of building exteriors and street scenes in Philadelphia, with some sites in nearby areas.

Sol Mednick photographs, circa 1920-1968 (bulk 1940-1968)

Abstract:: Solomon "Sol" Mednick (1916-1970) was a photographer active in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New York from the 1940s to the late 1960s. After becoming a successful freelance commercial photographer, Mednick took a position teaching photography at his alma mater, the Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts), in 1951. While there, he established the school's photography department, helped to nurture the Philadelphia photographic scene, and maintained his freelance business. The Sol Mednick photographs, circa 1920-1968 (bulk 1940-1968), consist of photographs, photograms, color transparencies, and a few negatives taken by Mednick during his career as photographer. The collection contains images that were used in Mednick's work as a commercial photographer, as well as non-commissioned, more artistic photographs, many of which depict images of Philadelphia.

Abstract:: Violet Oakley (1874-1961) was a painter, muralist, and stained glass designer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the first American woman to receive a public mural commission. She is best known for the series of murals she completed for the Pennsylvania State Capitol and her Renaissance-revival style of art. Abstract:: Benjamin D. Bernstein (1907-2003) was a businessman and art collector in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Heavily involved in the transportation and shipping industries, Bernstein had a passion for art collecting. Bernstein collected art from local Philadelphia artists, as well as works from several European artists, including those who were part of the avant-garde CoBrA movement.
