Abstract:: The Thornton Oakley collection of Howard Pyle and his students covers the influential artistic career of Howard Pyle and several of his students, most notably Maxfield Parrish, Violet Oakley, and N.C. Wyeth. The collection includes a wide range of materials, which was collected and assembled by Pyle’s former student Thornton Oakley. There are tear sheets of artwork published in magazines, original illustrations, photographs, research notes, manuscripts, and correspondence. Besides Howard Pyle, artists well represented in this collection include Elizabeth Shippen Green, Jessie Wilcox Smith, George Harding, Violet Oakley, N.C. Wyeth, and a large collection of material on Maxfield Parrish. There is also a series dedicated to the children’s author and art historian, Henry Clarence Pitz, who researched and wrote The Brandywine Tradition about Pyle and his artistic influence. Abstract:: Anna Russell Jones (1902-1995) was the first African American woman from Philadelphia to join the Armed Forces during World War II and the first African American graduate of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art and Design). She was a talented artist who worked as a wallpaper and carpet designer, civil service illustrator, and freelance artist. Her life evidenced her interest in African American history and civil rights, commitment to public service, and fascination with medical practice. The Anna Russell Jones papers, 1892-1989, primarily document her time in the military and as a civil service illustrator through scrapbooks, photographs, illustrations, sketches, and related correspondence and personnel records. There are also materials relating to her art education and some family papers, as well as correspondence, artworks, and documents from later in Jones' life.

Abstract:: Herbert Pullinger (1878-1961) was a painter, printmaker, and commercial illustrator active in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His art is considered part of the Ashcan School movement of the early twentieth century. Pullinger taught for almost forty years at what is now University of the Arts. The Herbert Pullinger prints and drawings, circa 1910-1950, consist of over 250 prints and drawings produced by Pullinger depicting buildings and streetscapes of Philadelphia and nearby areas.

Abstract:: The Philadelphia Sketch Club, founded in 1860, is America's oldest club for artists. The Philadelphia Sketch Club reference scrapbooks, circa 1915, are comprised of illustrations clipped from magazines and other publications. They were likely used by Philadelphia Sketch Club artists for reference or by teachers for instruction. Most of the clipped illustrations are arranged into alphabetical order by artist.

Abstract:: Woodmere Art Museum, located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was officially established in 1940 through the will of Philadelphia businessman, civic leader, and art collector, Charles Knox Smith (1845-1916) and is dedicated to Philadelphia-area artists. The building, grounds, and core of the museum's permanent collection were gifts of Smith, who purchased the Woodmere estate in 1898 and renovated it to better display his collection. As of 2016, Woodmere Art Museum boasts a number of indoor and outdoor spaces, in which it hosts various exhibitions, programs, art classes, lectures, performances, and other special events throughout the year. Abstract:: William H. Campbell (1915-2012) was an illustrator, painter, art director, and art teacher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a co-founder of the Main Point, a coffeehouse and intimate performing venue for folk artists established in 1964 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. An active participant in the Philadelphia arts community, Campbell had several group and solo exhibitions, and received awards from Philadelphia and New York art organizations. The William H.
