Abstract:: The Lower Merion School District was the first in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania to apply to establish free "common" public schools under legislation passed in Harrisburg in 1834. The Lower Merion School Board minute books, 1834-1856 and 1892-1913, consist of four volumes.

Abstract:: Internationally-known horticulturalist Richard Herman Rothe was the developer of what he called the "American rock garden." The Richard Rothe photographs and diaries, 1895-1930, consist of 250 lantern slides and color prints of garden views of Pennsylvania estates in eastern Montgomery County, Philadelphia, and the western Main Line as well as family scenes and views on Mount Desert Island, Maine. The collection also contains copies and originals of some of Rothe's diaries, photocopies of articles he published, and research materials on him.
