Bowles family correspondence, 1922-1960 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Bowles family was deeply involved with Quaker missionary and relief work during the 20th century. In 1900, the Bowles moved to Japan under the auspices of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and managed the Friends School and established the Tokyo Friends Center. During World War II, the Bowles family moved to Hawaii and worked with war refugees. The Bowles family correspondence consists of correspondence from Gilbert and Minnie Pickett Bowles to their son Gordon Townsend Bowles from 1922 to 1932 and to Gordon Townsend and Jane T. Bowles from 1932 to 1960. This correspondence is essentially family correspondence, but also includes information regarding the Bowles' Quaker relief work, their views on Quakerism and their day-to-day activities.

Abstract:
Henry Augustus Pilsbry, Dean of American Malacologists, was the conservator, curator and head of the Department of Shells at the Academy of Natural Sciences for 70 years. He was also the internationally recognized authority in the field of land mollusks. He wrote and edited many volumes of the Manual of Conchology and from 1889 until his death was an editor of the journal Nautilus, which he founded. A member of many scientific expeditions, he traveled all over the United States, to the Caribbean, South America, Mexico, Hawaii and other Pacific Islands, and to Australia. This collection contains the professional papers of Henry A. Pilsbry between the years 1885 and 1957. The bulk of this collection consists of Pilsbry’s working files and drafts of published material that came from those files, including a draft of the second volume of Land Mollusks of North America. Henry George family papers, circa 1844-2000 (bulk 1880-1950)

Abstract:
Henry George (1839-1897) was a journalist and political economist best known for writing about and popularizing the idea of the "single tax." His work led to several reform movements in the Progressive Era and inspired the economic philosophy known today as "Georgism." Two of George's children, Henry George Jr. and Anna George de Mille, continued to be active in the single tax movement and promoting their father's legacy after his death in 1897. The Henry George family papers, circa 1844-2000 (bulk 1880-1950), consist of correspondence, published and unpublished works, and other materials from and about Henry George, Henry George Jr., and Agnes George de Mille. There are also photographs, prints, and illustrations of the George family and of Anna George de Mille's family.

LeRoy M. Ennis collection of Japanese dentistry material, 1932-1951 (inclusive)

Abstract:
LeRoy M. Ennis (1893-1978) was a dentist and a professor at the University of Pennsylvania focusing on the study of roentgenology (radiation) and oral surgery. In 1951, he was a member of the United States Dental Commission which visited Osaka Dental College in Japan, an effort to aid dentists in that country. This collection documents Japanese dentistry in the 1930s to 1951 through photographs and includes publications about the practice of dentistry and dental education in Japan, many of which were produced prior to the trip.

Clyde M. Schuck papers, 1942-1945 (bulk) 1923-1961 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Clyde Mitchell Schuck of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, was a World War II veteran and a long-time employee of Campbell Soup Company. During World War II, he attained the rank of Infantry Major and was aide to General Eichelberger, commander of the U.S. Eighth Army in the Pacific Theater. The Clyde M. Schuck papers, 1923-1961 (bulk 1942-1945), primarily consist of wartime letters to his wife. The collection also contains a wartime photograph album, some of Schuck's service records, and scattered documents dating from other times in his life.
