The Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is located in the lower northeast section of the city and is bordered by the Frankford Creek on the south, Castor Avenue on the west, Cheltenham Avenue on the north, and roughly the I-95 expressway on the east. Originally a village, Frankford was incorporated as a borough in 1800 and was later absorbed into the City of Philadelphia in the 1854 Philadelphia city/county consolidation. As of 2015, Frankford is a working-class neighborhood with a diverse population, including a large number of African Americans, Asian Americans, Polish Americans, Italian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and West Indian Americans. Magarie Edna Green Andrews Smith was born in Elveton, West Virginia in 1911 and relocated to the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1933, where she married Robert Andrews and worked as a baby nurse. The Magarie Andrews Smith family papers, 1899-2001, consist of funeral programs, photographs, and other materials that relate to Magarie Edwards, her family, and the Frankford section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The bulk of the collection consists of late twentieth-century funeral programs for members of the African American community of Frankford.

Howard L. Barnes research on Northeast Philadelphia history, 1874-1990s (bulk 1970s-1990s)

Abstract:
Howard Lee Barnes (1909-1996) was a resident and historian of Frankford a neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Known as "Mr. Frankford," Barnes was a self-taught scholar and served as curator of the Historical Society of Frankford for nearly thirty years. He compiled a history of the Frankford Yellow Jackets, Philadelphia's first National Football League team and predecessor to the Philadelphia Eagles, and a history of the Frankford area as well. Howard L. Barnes research on Northeast Philadelphia history, 1874-1990s (bulk 1970s-1990s), consists primarily of Barnes' research on Northeast Philadelphia, which largely focuses on the neighborhood of Frankford and includes a subject file, handwritten and typed notes, photographs, whole issues of newspapers and clippings, photocopies of secondary-source materials, and some printed matter. The collection also includes a very small amount of Barnes' personal papers.

Josephine B. Hunter (1852-1926) was a lifelong resident of the Frankford neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1883, she married the prominent merchant T. Comly Hunter. Both Josephine and her husband were heavily involved in their local community and highly influential in the development of Frankford in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Josephine B. Hunter scrapbooks, 1903-1935, consist of fourteen scrapbooks compiled by Josephine B. Hunter. The scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings, invitations, event programs, letters, and obituaries relating to Frankford and its residents.
