Travel Club of Bristol (Pa.) records, 1901-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:: On March 1, 1901, Mrs. Emlen Martin organized the Travel Club of Bristol, Pennsylvania with sixteen charter members. The initial mission of the Travel Club was "the general improvement of its members in history, literature, art, and the vital interests of the day," but its objective soon changed to include its desire to be more service oriented toward the community. Throughout its existence, the Travel Club of Bristol supported various organizations, including the Bristol Junior-Senior High School, Washington Crossing Foundation, and Lower Bucks Hospital. In 1995, due to low membership, the group voted to disband the Travel Club and donate its remaining funds. The Travel Club of Bristol (Pa.) records, 1901-1995, document the group’s history and activities through financial and administrative records, scrapbooks, and various other materials such as correspondence, photographs, and ephemera.

Abstract:: Edward R. Barnsley (1906-1989) was an historian from Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was active in historic preservation, particularly the reconstruction of Pennsbury Manor. The Edward R. Barnsley research files, 1889-1985 (bulk 1941-1985), consist of Barnsley's research notes on local businesses, buildings, and people. There are mostly copies of primary-source documents and secondary-source articles by Barnsley and others on local history topics. There is a small amount of original materials, including original manuscripts written by Barnsley and incoming correspondence.

Abstract:: The Newtown Reliance Company for the Detecting and Apprehending of Horse Thieves and Other Villains, founded in 1819, is the third oldest 'Horse Company' in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The organization still meets, primarily for fellowship, as of 2013. The Newtown Historic Association collection on Newtown Reliance Company and other horse protection companies, 1819-1992, contains records of the Newtown Reliance Company; research, publications, and ephemera on Newtown Reliance Company and other horse protection societies (mostly compiled by historian Edward R. Barnsley); and a small amount of original records of other horse protection societies.

Abstract:: A.W. and W.M. Watson Lumber Company was founded in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1872. The company was acquired by Frost Lumber in 1953 and became Frost-Watson Lumber Corporation. The A.W. and W.M. Watson Company mill work order forms, 1918-2003 (bulk 1918-1922), consist of two large volumes of mill work order forms, 1918-1922, as well as several items of ephemera.

Savidge family papers, circa 1875-1970

Abstract:: Charles Savidge (1835-1908) married Sarah Hutchinson Morris (1864-1914), with whom he had two children: Morris Savidge (1895-1979) and Clarence Savidge (1900-1986). The family lived in Newtown (Bucks County, Pennsylvania), where they owned and operated Savidge Brothers retail store for over a century. The Savidge family papers, circa 1875-1970, consist mostly of personal papers, particularly relating to Morris and Clarence. The collection includes letters from Morris to his brother while the former was in military training and active duty in France during World War I as well as related photographs. Other materials in the collection include an album of funeral cards and calling cards/invitations, family photo albums, and some correspondence, financial papers, and ephemera relating to other family members.

Abstract:: Settled by Quakers beginning in 1680, the small town of Langhorne in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, grew as an important transportation center between Trenton and Philadelphia due to its location at the intersection of major roads connecting the two cities. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town, which served as a stop along the rail line, became a popular summer vacation destination for wealthy Philadelphians. The Historic Langhorne Association clippings and obituaries collection, 1951-2012, includes newspaper clippings relating to various local history topics organized into folders by subject, such as businesses, people, Langhorne history, politics, and events.
