Abstract:: Courtney C. Smith (1916-1969) was the ninth president of Swarthmore College, from 1953 to his death. The collection contains his official correspondence including correspondence with faculty. It includes extensive material on the controversy surrounding the construction of The Blue Route, Interstate Highway 476.

Abstract:: In June 1940 at the age of thirty-five, John W. Nason (1905-2001) became the eighth president of Swarthmore College. A strong proponent of the Honors Program, he continued the mission of academic excellence established by Frank Aydelotte while adapting the campus to the pressures of World War. The first series of this collection, 1927-1965, contains John W.Nason's official correspondence and correspondence with faculty. There is also one box of reports collected by Nason's Vice President James A. Perkins, 1944-1946, received as a separate records transfer. Series B, Personal Papers, 1939-1948, includes correspondence received as a separate donation.

Abstract:: This collection includes photocopies of letters from Joseph and Hannah Evans addressed to their children William, Joseph, and Mary, while they attended Westtown Boarding School. Also included are letters from William Evans to his parents, and from Joseph Evans to his brother. These letters primarily relate family news.

Abstract:: William Hubben (1895-1974) was a prominent Quaker educator, speaker, editor, and author. Born in Germany in 1895, William Hubben joined the small but growing movement of German Quakers in 1923 and participated in a number of international religious and peace conferences. His political involvement with the Social Democratic Party caused his dismissal in 1933 by Hitler's government. He emigrated to the United States with his wife, Maria, and children soon afterward, and went on to be heavily involved with Quakerism there. The collection contains correspondence (1906-1976), manuscript and published writings (1924-70), editorials, reviews, speeches, notes, pictures and memorabilia, and reference materials of William Hubben. Part of the collection is in German.
