Abstract:: William N. Jennings (1860-1946) was a photographer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania best known for being credited with the first successful photograph of lightning and his work in aerial photography. William N. Jennings scrapbook, photographs, and negatives, 1882-1937, consist of Jennings's scrapbook documenting his efforts to photograph lightning, including prints of the first photograph of lightning, as well as photographs, film negatives, and glass plate negatives of people at street scenes in Philadelphia, PA and nearby areas. There is also one oversized item consisting of mounted images of lightning.

Rolla Foley Papers, 1941-1979 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains photographs, letters, documents, and pamphlets regarding Rolla Foley's musical career in the Near East between 1939-1945. He had various roles throughout music performances and festivals, most often compiling and editting the music, but also conducting on occasion. These festivals include the 1941 Palestine Children's Music Festival, the 1943 Children's Music Festival, the 1943 Syrian Students' Music Festival, the 1944-1945 Near East Music Festival, and the 1945 Folk Music Festival that took place in Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and the former Tranjordan. This collection also contains 1979 letters regarding Foley's career and works during his lifetime.

Edward S. Curtis collection of interpositive glass plates and papers, 1899-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Edward S. Curtis (1868-1952) was a photographer, best known for documenting more than eighty tribes of Native Americans west of the Mississippi from the Mexican border to northern Alaska. In addition to taking more than 40,000 pictures over 30 years, Curtis produced The North American Indian, a set of twenty volumes containing text, photogravures, and a corresponding portfolio with additional photogravures. This collection consists of two gifts of glass plate interpositives with extensive artistic modifications by Edward Curtis for his The North American Indian as well as a small number of proof sheets of photogravures, largely from portfolios, bearing editorial markings and corrections; correspondence and material relating to the funding and publishing of the The North American Indian; and brochures and pamphlets advertising Curtis's studio and his photography.

J. Patrick and Patricia A. Kennedy collection of Arthur Tress photographs, 1964-2015 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Arthur Tress (born 1940) is an American photographer and collector of Japanese illustrated books and prints. This collection contains photographic prints from fourteen of Tress's series. His style has often been described as "staged surrealism" but his body of work includes a diverse range of approaches. Included in the collection are black and white and color prints, the majority of which were taken in New York City (including Staten Island, Coney Island, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan), San Francisco, and San Luis Obispo, California, dating from 1967 to 2015.

Eadweard Muybridge Collection, 1870-1981 (inclusive)

Extent:: 20 cubic feet
Abstract:: Eadweard Muybridge is a noted photographer who began his studies of animal locomotion in 1872 while trying to settle a bet for railroad tycoon Leland Stanford. In 1883 several important Philadelphians attended a meeting in the office of the provost of the University of Pennsylvania, and decided to provide Muybridge with the grounds of the Veterinary Hospital and a $5,000 advance to begin work on the landmark study, Animal Locomotion. This study, completed in 1887 and published under the sponsorship of the University, would prove to be of great use to artists, anatomists, physiologists, and athletes. The Eadweard Muybridge Collection documents his photographic career and the contributions he made to motion pictures. Documentation relating Muybridge's Animal Locomotion study, done under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania, represents the bulk of this collection.
