Abstract:: Igal Roodenko was a pacifist, peace and civil rights activist, and advocate of nonviolence. He was a member of the War Resisters League Executive Committee, served on boards of A.J. Norman J. Whitney Papers, 1938-1967 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Norman Jehiel Whitney (1891-1967) was a Quaker teacher, writer and devoted peace worker. From 1919-1957 he helped establish, and directed for many years, the Syracuse Peace Council. He left Syracuse in 1957 to work for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in peace education. Whitney's major peace work was in the area of counseling conscientious objectors to war (COs), particularly those in Civilian Public Service (CPS) camps. In 1941 he helped establish the New York State Board for Civilian Public Service, which attempted to counsel and assist Conscientious Objectors in New York state.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana Papers, 1914-1950 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Dana was a writer and pacifist who taught comparative literature at Columbia University from 1912 until 1917. Dana lost his teaching post as an opponent of American participation in World War I. Dana continued to advocate civil liberties and the rights of conscientious objectors.

Peace Pilgrim Papers, 1908-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Peace Pilgrim was born Mildred Lisette Norman in 1908. Between 1953 and l964, she had walked 25,000 miles across the U.S. for peace. Peace Pilgrim eventually made seven pilgrimages, crossing North America. She was killed in an automobile accident on July 7, 1981, at the age of 71.

Edwin D. Mead and Lucia Ames Mead Papers, 1876-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Edwin D. Mead (1849-1937), and Lucia Ames Mead (1856-1936), were both leading pacifists, writers, and social reformers of the U.S. and international peace movement. Edwin Mead directed the work of the World Peace Foundation and participated in many international peace congresses. He was an American delegate to the International Peace Bureau. Mead helped found the School Peace League and was a prominent member of the American Peace League. Lucia Ames Mead was a leading member of many feminist and pacifist organizations, including the Woman's Peace Party. Mead was a delegate to the founding conference of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom in 1919 and served as a vice-president on the board of the National Council for Prevention of War. She was also an officer of the National Council of Women of the United States, and was a member of many U.S. feminist associations.

Abstract:: Marion Coddington Bromley and Ernest Bromley were active members of the Society of Friends, absolute pacifists, war tax resisters, and worked for racial integration in the United States. They are best remembered as founders of the Peacemakers, and as war tax resisters.

Milada Marsalka Papers, 1965-1998 (bulk)

Abstract:: Milada Marsalka was a member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, U.S. Section, active with the New Haven, Connecticut Branch. Marsalka worked for American-Soviet friendship and conversion of economy from military to civilian production. She was born in Czechoslovakia and later moved to the United States. Marsalka died in 1999 or 2000.

David McReynolds Papers, 1943- (inclusive)

Abstract:: David McReynolds (1929-2018), was an activist with the War Resisters League, the Socialist Party USA and the Democratic Socialists of America. He was an editor of Liberation magazine in the 1950s and a leader of the WRL from the 1950s until his retirement in 1999. McReynolds ran for Congress twice and for President of the U.S. twice, including a run in 2000. McReynolds has attempted to integrate anti-war and pacifist philosophy with Socialist economics. David McReynolds was openly gay and had written about this topic as well.

Harold Barton Collected Papers, 1944-1949 (bulk)

Abstract:: In the early 1940s National Mental Health Foundation originated in 1944-1945 when Harold Barton and three associates, serving at Byberry State Hospital in Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), announced plans for a national campaign to improve the conditions in mental hospitals. The exposure of these conditions through the efforts of men serving in CPS, and their efforts to be a nonviolent presence in mental institutions, began a new movement in mental health care in the U.S. The National Mental Health Foundation still exists today as the National Mental Health Association.
