William Draper Lewis Personal Correspondence, 1874-1949 (inclusive)

Abstract:: William Draper Lewis was born in Philadelphia in 1867. In 1891, he received both a law degree and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1892, he became editor of the American Law Register, one of the oldest legal periodicals of the time. That same year, Lewis married Caroline Mary Cope. They had four children, Henry, Alfreda Cope, Anna, and William Draper Jr. and resided in Germantown, Pennsylvania. In 1896, Lewis joined the law department at the University of Pennsylvania as Dean and Professor of Law. Under Lewis' leadership, the law school flourished as he recruited new faculty, broadened the curriculum, and strengthened the collections of the Biddle Law Library. He served as Dean until 1914 but continued on the faculty until 1924. In 1923, Lewis became the founding director of the American Law Institute (ALI). Lewis died in Northeast Harbor, Maine in 1949. Abstract:: Catherine Clendinning "Kate" Gillespie was the wife of Reverend Robert Gillespie, an Irish Protestant missionary who served in India. This scrapbook was presented to Kate by her husband on their seventh wedding anniversary in 1875.

Land and property records for the Philadelphia city block bounded by Walnut and Sansom Streets, and South 6th and 7th Streets., 1794-1908 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection documents the history of land ownership for the block in center city Philadelphia that is currently occupied by the Curtis Building, which is bounded by South 6th and South 7th Streets, and Sansom and Walnut Streets. There are 107 land deeds or indentures, and 23 other records of various sorts that document the sale, purchase, or transfer of property from 1794 to 1908 within this block. The oldest document is an indenture for the entire plot from James Logan, Jr. to John Swanwick, on December 31, 1794. The most recent document is a 1908 survey of the same plot, likely made for the Curtis Publishing Company by the City of Philadelphia. The majority are handwritten on vellum and are largely in good condition. Records are arranged chronologically.

Collection of material relating to William Wait copyright legacy, 1877-1933 (inclusive)

Abstract:: William Wait (1821-1880) was a lawyer and an author of a number of legal texts pertaining to the law in New York. His last will and testament allowed for the continuation of the publication and sale of the law books for which he had copyright until his youngest son turned 21 in 1889. This collection contains information about the legacy of Wait's copyrighted works following his death in 1880.

Abstract:: Thomas Hart (1894-1975) was a Philadelphia lawyer and civic figure. The Thomas Hart papers measure 15.33 linear feet in 16 boxes, date mostly from 1893 to 1971, and primarily consist of correspondence, documents, and ephemera relating to Hart and his family's organizational involvements, specifically with the Eagle Island Gunning Club, Junior League, Lankenau Hospital, Mask & Wig Club, Philadelphia Charity Ball, Inc., Philadelphia Club, Society of Colonial Wars, and State in Schuylkill. There is also Hart's personal correspondence, material relating to his personal life, and material from various members of the Hart family.

Abstract:: From the creation of the Board of Trustees in 1749, there has always been a person who was responsible for the task of maintaining the minutes, coordinating meetings, and preparing and, beginning in 1828, signing diplomas. The records of the Office of the Secretary reflect the many duties and responsibilities of the Secretary as both an officer of the Board of Trustees and as well as an official in the University administration.
