Overview and metadata sections
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania opened in 1874 to provide a clinical environment for the University's School of Medicine at its new West Philadelphia Campus. In the ensuing decades, the Hospital has grown to be major health care center for the city and region.
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Patient Treatment Records document some of the patient care at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 1877 to 1936. These bound volumes represent only a small fraction of the original collection of patient records the Hospital once had. As such, there are significant gaps. Topics covered include surgery, orthopedics, urology, cardiology, diabetes, tumors, and ear and eye. Among the attending physicians are James Tyson (M1863), Alfred Stengel (M 1889), J. William White (M1871, Ph.D. 1871), Alfred C. Wood, Charles H. Frazier (C1889, M1892), and Edward Martin (M1883).
Patient records include family histories, notes on treatments, statistical information, and occassionally photographs. There are also some pediatric cases included. Of note are sailors referred by the British Consulatd for syphilis.
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Patient Treatment Records are organized chronologically by date of volume, with each volume in its original order.
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Patient Treatment Records were transferred to the University of Pennsylvania Archives from the College of Physicians of Philadelphia on March 23, 2022 (Accession number 2022:015).
