George A. Hay collection of administrative files of the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, 1925-1965 (bulk) 1890-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:: From 1925 to 1970, the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMC) underwent significant change, adapting to both survive and prosper in a transforming society. Administrative change was brought about and explored to spark institutional growth and/or to mollify financial stress. Among the more significant events in the College’s history was the 1930 move to new and larger facilities in East Falls, and an administrative reorganization in 1942. In the 1940s and 1960s, WMC also explored the financial and administrative benefits of merging with other institutions in the Philadelphia area; Kensington Women’s Hospital and the Woman’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Jefferson Medical College. Amidst all of the change, WMC continued to honor its traditions and celebrate milestones, especially its Centennial Anniversary in 1950. Black Women Physicians Project, 1807-2013 (inclusive) 1971-1992 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Black Women Physicians Project records contains documentation of the lives and careers of Black women in medicine, compiled by Margaret Jerrido, who served as an Archivist at the Medical College of Philadelphia. Started in the 1980s by Jerrido, BWPP is an artificial collection (a collection with materials from disparate sources intentionally arranged for research use) and includes not only Biographical Reference Files, but also oral histories, planning materials that supported BWPP, and photographs. Because the records are largely photocopies of materials from various times, BWPP covers a date range of 1807-2013, with the bulk of materials (especially original materials) covering 1971-1992

John B. Garrett papers, 1822-1961 (inclusive) 1853-1872 (bulk)

Abstract:: John B. Garrett (1836-1924) was an original member of the Associated Executive Committee of Friends on Indian Affairs. Topics discussed include appointment of agents, missionary work, education and citizenship of Indigenous Americans, use of military force, annuity goods, opening of Indigenous territory to settlement by white people, etc. Includes minutes of the 1871 committee meeting, letter of Garrett to his family telling of a 1865 visit to Fort Smith, Arkansas, as part of the "Grand Indian Council," as well as 17 photographs of indigenous Americans present at the Council and printed reports of the meetings.

Germantown Employment Society for Women, 1871-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Germantown Employment Society for Women originated out of a concern felt by a group of Quaker women associated with Germantown Monthly Meeting to aid women with little or no income and no way of earning money outside the home. The Germantown Employment Society for Women records include bylaws for 1953; correspondence (1934-1941); treasurer's accounts (1871-1957); annual reports (1900-1956); minutes (1872-1897).

Gummere-Mott Family papers, 1715-1919 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Materials pertain to the Gummere family, including the 1868 diary of Francis Barton Gummere, letters of various members of the Gummere family in the mid-19th century and a manuscript "The Romance of Old Silver" possibly by Amelia Mott Gummere. Also material of the New York Mott family, including a volume of the correspondence of Richard Mott (a minister) and Abigail Field Mott (an elder) who were husband and wife; a diary kept by Richard Mott during his travels in the ministry, 1797-1798; a Mott family scrapbook kept by Richard F. Mott and his daughter, Amelia Mott Gummere, 1886, including a D.S. by Gov. DeWitt Clinton of New York; Mott family miscellany; and selected writings of Robert F. and Hannah B. Mott. The collection also includes Smith family materials, such as the journal of Amelia Smith, 1814-1821, the order book of Richard S. Smith, a Philadelphia Quaker merchant and the 1804 Gardening Memorandum of Margaret Hill Morris.

Hartshorne Family papers, 1797-1957 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Papers include correspondence of thirty-two members and relatives of the Hartshorne family. -Of special interest are the medical notes, articles, and correspondence, 1819-1845, of Joseph Hartshorne, M.D. These are noteworthy because of his many innovation in surgery, such as the use of animal ligatures, plus his detailed descriptions of treatments for various ailments. -The correspondence of Anna C. Hartshorne covering her missionary work in Japan -Henry Hartshorne's "Letters from Japan," printed in the Friend Review, 1893-1894, plus sermons, etc., given by him while in Japan with Anna, 1893-1897. -The bulk of the collection consists of the correspondence, medical papers, literary works, etc., of Henry Hartshorne, M.D., son of Joseph and father of Anna. -also include genealogical material on the Bonsall, Hartshorne, Saunders, Yarnall, and Cope families as well as photographs.
