Abstract:: Henry Butler Allen (1887-1962) was a metallurgical and mechanical engineer and served as Director of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1935 until 1947. During World War II, Allen served on the National Defense Research Committee (NDRC) in the Armor and Ordnance Division. The Henry Butler Allen papers, 1924-1959 (bulk 1933-1959), consist of materials produced as part of or relating to Allen's duties at Director and Secretary of the Franklin Institute in the 1930s, as well as materials related to work he conducted during World War II for the National Defense Research Committee in Philadelphia and England.

Tomlinson, Foehr, and Peters families papers, 1870-1970 (bulk) 1713-1998 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Ritner W. Tomlinson (1880-1949) was raised on his family's farm in the Bustleton neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ritner married Caroline F. Foehr (1890-1981) in 1911 and together they had four children: twins Isabel R. (1915-2010) and Esther R. (1915-1938), Ritner Pierson "Buddy" (1922-1944), and Thelma Claire (1924-2006). Ritner and Caroline raised their family on the Tomlinson Farm, which Ritner had inherited from his parents in the 1920s. In the mid-1930s, the Tomlinsons lost this farm due to financial difficulties, and relocated to another farm property in nearby Huntingdon Valley (Montgomery County). The Tomlinson, Foehr, and Peters families papers, 1713-1998 (bulk 1870-1970), consist of photographs, legal and financial documents, correspondence, diaries, ephemera, and other materials related to the Tomlinson, Foehr, and Peters families. The bulk of the material is from the Tomlinson family and predominately relates to Ritner W., his wife Caroline, and their children.

Synthane Corporation World War II scrapbooks, 1943-1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Synthane Corporation in Oaks, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania manufactured Bakelite laminated products before World War II. They shifted to war production after hostilities broke out, and offered special benefits to employees who left to serve in the military. The Synthane Corporation World War II scrapbooks, 1943-1947, contain correspondence between Ronald E. Heaton, assistant treasurer for Synthane Corporation, and employees who served in the military during World War II. Letters make up the bulk of the collection but there are also a few photographs of servicemen, and some ephemera, pamphlets, newsletters, and circulars produced by Synthane about the war effort.

Fornance family papers, 1794-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joseph Fornance (1804-1852) was a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Norristown, Pennsylvania. Like the elder Joseph, his son Joseph Fornance (1841-1923) and grandson Joseph Knox Fornance (1882-1965) were lawyers involved with politics. The Fornance family papers, 1794-1989, is an extensive collection of correspondence, ledgers, diaries, photograph albums, scrapbooks, and documents covering several generations of one family. Family members were involved in numerous matters over more than one-and-a-half centuries, so among other subjects, there is rich documentation of military service during the Civil War and World War I, the election of Woodrow Wilson, and early efforts at historic preservation (the Fornance family home is considered the oldest in Norristown).

James M. Shimer Kaiser-Fleetwings papers, 1942-1958 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Established in 1926, Fleetwings, Inc. was an aircraft components factory that moved from Long Island, New York to Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1934. Due to the company's success during World War II, Henry J. Kaiser's Kaiser Industries invested in the company and renamed it Kaiser-Fleetwings Corp.; the company folded in 1962. James M. (Jim) Shimer, Jr. (1914-2007) worked there as a technical illustrator. The James M. Shimer Kaiser-Fleetwings papers, 1942-1958, consists of materials relating to James M. Shimer's work as a technical illustrator for Kaiser-Fleetwings. There are a large number of Shimer's drawings of aircrafts, blueprints, technical specifications, photographs of aircraft and of models, and promotional brochures for the aircraft, as well as some of Shimer's employment records and various employee newsletters and publications.

Abstract:: Henry A. Liese (1914-2003) was an aircraft manufacturer who cofounded the Lavelle Company that created the world's first weather satellite. Prior to founding this company, Liese worked for Fleetwings, Inc., an aircraft and aircraft components company located in Bristol, Pennsylvania that was very active during World War II. The Henry A. Liese collection, 1944-1981, consist of a large number of photographic prints relating to Fleetwings; photocopies of articles dealing with Fleetwings and the aircraft industry; and some original materials relating to Keystone Aircraft Corporation.

Abstract:: Norman C. Brauer, (1924-1982) was a resident of Warminster, Pennsylvania and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was involved in salvage operations after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Norman C. Brauer, Jr. papers, circa 1941, contain photographs, newspaper clippings, a blueprint, and ephemera. The highlights of this collection are a scrapbook of photos and clippings of Pearl Harbor, and a blueprint of the deck of the USS Oklahoma.

Abstract:: Clyde Mitchell Schuck of Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, was a World War II veteran and a long-time employee of Campbell Soup Company. During World War II, he attained the rank of Infantry Major and was aide to General Eichelberger, commander of the U.S. Eighth Army in the Pacific Theater. The Clyde M. Schuck papers, 1923-1961 (bulk 1942-1945), primarily consist of wartime letters to his wife. The collection also contains a wartime photograph album, some of Schuck's service records, and scattered documents dating from other times in his life.
