Ryerss family papers, 1758-1931 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Waln family were prominent Philadelphia Quakers who made a fortune in the 18th-century China Trade and descended from the original Pennsylvania settler Nicholas Waln. Joseph Waln Ryerss built Burholme as his summer house in 1859, and upon his death he left it to his son, Robert Waln Ryerss (1831-1896). Robert Waln Ryerss was a lawyer. He scandalized Philadelphia society by marrying his housekeeper, Mary Ann Reed, eight months before his death. Mary Ann remarried, and spent the rest of her life traveling to collect items for the museum now located in Ryerss' mansion. The Ryerss family papers, 1758-1931, contain documents, photographs, and volumes. Most of the collection relates to Robert W. Ryerss, his Waln antecedents, or his wife Mary Ann Reed (later Bawn).

James and Lorah families papers, 1833-1954 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Oliver P. James (1815-1894) was a prominent doctor and community member in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He, his wife Sarah (1824-1906), and their three children Oliver (1860-1890), Martha (1862-1918), and Sarah (1864-1954) lived at what is now known as the James-Lorah Memorial Home at 132 N. Main Street in Doylestown. In 1896, Dr. James' daughter, Martha, married George H. Lorah (1863-1945), a minister at the Doylestown Methodist Episcopal Church. Martha's sister, Sarah James was a charter member of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA), and upon her passing in 1954, the family home and its contents and property, as well as a trust fund for maintenance were bequeathed to the VIA. The James and Lorah families papers, 1833-1954, consist of original manuscript documents from the James and Lorah families, primarily Dr. Oliver P. Nicholas L. Childs family papers, 1818-1991 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Childs and Moon families were long-time residents of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Nicholas Lewarne Childs (1940-2009) taught history and Asian studies in private secondary schools in New Jersey, Iran, and Singapore. The bulk of the Childs family papers, 1818-1991, relate to Nicholas L. Childs and date from about 1965 to 1991, but there are also older materials from Louis M. Childs II, Nicholas L. Moon, Jacob Childs, Lizzy Orchard, and other Childs and Moon family members. The collection is comprised of correspondence, travel journals, travel ephemera, lecture notes and slides, photographs, genealogical research, legal documents, vital records, and other miscellaneous papers.

William Edmonds Horner Papers, 1821-1969 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Willaim Edmonds Horner was dean of the Medical School of Pennsylvania (1822-1852), Professor of Anatomy (1831-1853), and wrote the first pathology textbook published in the United States (Treatise on Pathological Anatomy, 1829). The Journals detail William Edmonds Horner's travels from the United States to Europe in 1821.

Miller-Dickey Family papers, 1786-1992 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection consists of papers of the Cross, Dickey, and Miller families of Chester County, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Baltimore, Maryland. John Miller and his wife, Margaret, emigrated from Scotland to Pennsylvania with their young daughter, Jane, in 1786. Miller, who was trained as a stone cutter in Scotland, developed a thriving marble business in Philadelphia; he also owned a farm in Great Valley, Pennsylvania. John was active in the Philadelphia community; he was an early member of the Pennsylvania Abolitionist Society, and a supporter of the Magdalene and Missionary Societies. The papers in this collection consist primarily of personal correspondence, business records, genealogical notes, diaries, and family photographs, of the Cross, Dickey and Miller families. Dixon family papers, 1842-1893 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Edward H. Dixon (1808-1880) was a New York City surgeon. Dixon earned his M.D. from Rutgers Medical College in 1829 or 1830, and then studied material medica, theory and practice, and therapeutics under Dr. John Francis; and surgery under Dr. Alexander Mott. Afterwards, Dixon accepted positions at the Deaf and Dumb Asylum and House of Refuge. Later, he opened his own practice as a consulting surgeon, as well as a private surgical hospital. He married his wife, Sarah S. Hart, in 1833, and they had one daughter, Julia, in 1836. Julia married Elias G. Brown in 1857, and they had several children. Sarah (Hart) Dixon died in 1883, and Julia (Dixon) Brown around 1893. The Dixon family papers span from 1842 to 1893 (although the bulk of material dates from the 1860s to the 1880s), and document the everyday life of women living in the late 19th-century, as well as the relationships between a grandfather and his grandchildren. Abstract:: The Belfield papers include materials from families who lived in the Belfield mansion in Germantown, Pennsylvania from 1826 until 1984; however, the papers span the years 1679 to 1977. Featured individuals include William and Sarah Logan Fisher Wister, their son John Wister and his wife, Sarah Tyler Boas Wister, their granddaughter Sarah Logan Wister Starr and her husband, James Starr, and their great-granddaughter S. Logan Starr Blain and her husband, Dr. Daniel Blain. The collection also houses papers from related individuals in the Emlen, Fisher, Hall, Lindley, Logan, Meigs, Wister, and other families.
