Abstract:: George M. Justice was a successful Philadelphia merchant and important Hicksite Quaker. Beginning in 1825 until shortly before his death, he kept volumes of memorandum reflecting his thoughts on religion, the Hicksite Separation and its aftermath in Philadelphia, family information, astronomy, slavery, and other topics.

Byberry Philosophical Society Minutes, 1837-1925, 1927-1959 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Minutes of the Byberry Philosophical Society which was formed in the early nineteenth century for the "acquisition and promotion of scientific knowledge." The group collected specimens of flora, fauna, minerals, and items of historic interest and eventually erected a building to hold the collection. Almost all of their members were Quakers, but this was not a condition of membership.

Abstract:: Primarily the letters of the Quaker Scattergood family detailing daily life in the Philadelphia area and touching on issues of dress. There is a also a letter of Joseph Scattergood from Tunesassa, New York, telling of his work with Cornplanter's Native Americans. As well, there is a diary kept by Ann Sellers from 1853 to 1856 and a cookbook, circa 1800.

Abstract:: This collection contains materials pertaining to the Taylor family. Thomas Wistar journals, 1841-1875 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Thomas Wistar's journal entries largely describe his work as an Indian Commissioner, including visits to Washington D.C., the Seneca Nation, the Wichita Indian Agency, and other Native American Reservations. In addition to his work as a commissioner, entries detail social calls with family and friends, descriptions of Quaker meetings, and religious reflection and prayers.

Thomas Fisher letterbook, 1823-1859 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The majority of correspondence included is business correspondence related to Fisher's mathematics and his book, "Dial of the Seasons, or a Portraiture of Nature," on Fisher's theory of the effect of "the angles of incidence of the meridian sunlight." There are also a small number of letters of personal correspondence, generally letters of introduction for friends or family traveling to Philadelphia or New York.
