Abstract:: In 1883, Quakers Albert Keith Smiley and his brother Daniel Smiley organized the first annual conference to discuss assistance to Native Americans at their estate at Lake Mohonk in New York state. These conferences were widely attended by specialists in various fields, as well as important officials. Only later were Native Americans represented. The concern to "uplift" was also directed at Filipino, Hawaiian, African American and Puerto Rican peoples, though attention at the conferences was primarily focused on Native Americans.

Elizabeth Gray Vining papers, 1897-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Elizabeth Gray Vining (1902-1999) was an author of children's books and served as the tutor to the crown prince of Japan, Akihito, from 1946 to 1950. The collection consists of correspondence, materials regarding books authored by Vining, articles, lectures and addresses, photographs, and information documenting her and her family's lives.

Abstract:: The Quaker families of Jones and Cadbury were interrelated with many other Quaker families in the United States and England. This collection provides a rich source of genealogical and historical information, not only on the Jones and Cadbury families, and especially Mary Hoxie Jones (1904-2003) and Emma Cadbury Jr. (1875-1965), but also, significantly, on the Warder family, as well as the Bartram, Brown, Carter, Foulke, Kaighn, Lowry, Mennell, Pearsall, Shinn, and Shipley families.

Abstract:: Letters relating to the Penn School on St. Helena, S.C. from the Civil War through 1928 sent to Francis R. Cope and Francis R. Cope Jr. of Woodbourne Orchard. Both originals and copies, the original letters are from Laura Towne and Ellen Murray who taught and monetarily supported the school, also Mary R. Haines, as well as extracts from letters of Arthur Sumner who was principal of a school for African Americans in Charleston, S.C.

Hannah Bacon Evans letters, 1888-1925 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The letters of Hannah Bacon Evans (1839-1939) are written almost exclusively to her niece, Edith Wistar Stokes Silver (1873-1949), offering a picture of the life of an unmarried Quaker woman in Philadelphia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also letters to other family members, primarily on family life, but also missionary work and other topics. The letters have been transcribed.
