Hollywood Children's Summer Home of Baltimore City, 1892-1922 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Hollywood Children's Summer Home of Baltimore City was a Quaker association established in 1892 to provide a two-week outing in the countryside for poor children of Baltimore City and vicinity. It was closed in 1917, due to the proliferation of other fresh air charities in Baltimore. The collection includes minutes, financial records, roll book, and annual reports.

Media Friends' Association minutes, 1894-1925 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Media Friends Association, a Quaker study and social group, was established in 1894 in Media, Pennsylvania, by members of Providence Preparative Meeting (Hicksite). The goal of the Association was to further discussion and knowledge of the history and testimonies of Friends, and the meetings, which included reports, papers, and readings, were open to all who were interested. The collection contains one volume of minutes, with constitution and by-laws included.

New York Female Association records, 1798-1988 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Formed in 1798 to give aid to the sick poor, the New York Female Association created the first public female school in New York in 1800. Until 1845, it worked with the Free School Society to establish and maintain public schools in New York while also continuing its efforts to help the indigent. Since 1845, the association has been a small gift-giving committee. The collection includes minutes and financial records.

Central Soup Society, 1860-1968 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Central Soup Society of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was incorporated on March 6, 1861, with the charitable purpose of distributing soup and other food to the poor and needy during the inclement seasons. The organization was founded by Hicksite Quakers and continued to serve the people of Philadelphia throughout the 20th century. It survives at the turn of the 21st century as a foundation. Records of the Central Soup Society; includes financial records, minutes, and miscellaneous historical documents concerning the organization. More than half of the records pertain to some financial aspect of the organization. Though the time scope of the file encompasses the organization's inception (1861) through the late 1960's, the majority of the materials are from the beginning to the middle part of the 20th century.

Penington Friends House Records, 1896-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:: A Friends Home Association was established in 1891 in New York City. The Penington was acquired in 1899 at 215 15th Street, adjoining 15th Street Meeting House, and serves as a boarding home for Friends and friendly people. In 1983, the Penington was reorganized and a new Board was elected. After a major renovation in 1985, the name was changed to Penington Friends House to reflect a return to a more Quakerly style of management. Collection contains minutes, guest registers, reports and miscellaneous records of Friends Home Association and Penington Friends House, 1896-1985.

Gibbons Home (Springfield, Pa.) records, ca.1880-ca.1987 (bulk: 1892-1969) (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Gibbons Home was a residential home in Springfield Township, Delaware County, Pa., for elderly women of limited income. It was established in 1918 by the will of Sallie P. Gibbons, the last survivor of a family which had local Quaker roots. The Home was finally opened in the family house on Baltimore Pike in 1940. The house was torn down in 1970 to make way for a mall, and the Gibbons Home moved to a new building on Lincoln Avenue in Springfield. In 2000 the assets of the Home were transferred to Presbyterian Homes, and the property was sold. The collection contains legal, property, and financial records of the Gibbons Home, and Gibbons family photographs, paintings, and some Gibbons family memorabilia which was retained when the Home moved to its new location.

Brantingham-Stratton Family Papers, 1817-1937 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains papers, in part typed transcriptions, concerning the Brantingham and Stratton families, Quaker families of England and Ohio. Includes correspondence and a transcript of sea journal (1798-1799) of George Brantingham (1770-1845), an English Quaker who emigrated to Philadelphia and by 1821 had settled in Salem, Ohio. Most of the correspondence is directed to George Brantingham or his daughter Hannah from members of Brantingham's family in England, including brothers, John Brantingham (1768-1823), Joseph Brantingham (1754-1832), and William Brantingham (1756-1840). Also included is a typed transcript of an autobiography of Daniel Stratton (1737-1872) of Ohio. The papers, including correspondence, biographies, and genealogical data, were compiled by Edith Stratton Platt, a descendant.

Abstract:: This collection contains papers and relics collected by Anna Pettit Broomell concerning Quaker families of Columbiana County, Ohio, and Salem County, New Jersey. It includes family correspondence, accounts, albums, school copybooks, notebooks, piece book, almanacs, clippings, printed material, and memorabilia of the Pettit, Hussey, Griffith, and related families. Includes letters from Hannah G. Pettit of Columbiana County, Ohio, to her sister, Hester G. Hussey, from David Pettit to his family in 1873 while on a tour of Indian reservations in Nebraska, as well as a letter from James Baldwin to Anna Pettit Broomell concerning the book, In My Youth.

Richard Tapper Cadbury Papers, 1799-1924 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Richard Tapper Cadbury (1853-1929) was a Quaker businessman, teacher, writer, and art connoisseur. His mother's brother, Earl Shinn, Jr., (1838-1886) was a well-known art critic. The collection contains correspondence and memorabilia of the Cadbury, Comfort, Haines, and Shinn families. The letters give a detailed picture of life in Philadelphia Quaker families of the mid 19th century, and of the hardships of those who participated in the California gold rush.

Joseph Bancroft Family Papers, 1868-1989 [bulk, 1868-1914] (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joseph Bancroft (1803-1874) was Hicksite Quaker and cloth manufacturer from Wilmington, Delaware, who worked for the reunification of the Society of Friends in the 1860's and 1870's. He wrote a number of religious tracts and published a book, A Persuasive To Unity, which he published in 1874. At his death, Bancroft established a trust fund to secure the free circulation of this book among Quakers. This collection includes materials which relate to Joseph Bancroft's writing and other religious activities, particularly to the efforts regarding the circulation of A Persuasive To Unity. His son, William Poole Bancroft (1835-1928), continued to promote its distribution. He was active on the George School Committee 1888-1928 and served as Clerk of the Committee, 1896-1919.
