Abstract:
James S. Haviland, a birthright Quaker, was born in 1849, the son of William F. and Sarah Ann (Carpenter) Haviland of Purchase Monthly Meeting (N.Y.). The collection contains correspondence, financial, and legal papers, and miscellaneous manuscripts of the families of James S. and Elizabeth (Griffen) Haviland. Includes materials of the related Griffen, Field, and Parry families, especially the correspondence of Seneca Ely and Priscilla Stubbs Parry of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, 1826-67, and of his sister, Rachel Parry Brosius.

Abstract:
George Iden (1820-1897) was a Hicksite Quaker farmer of Sherwood, Cayuga County, New York. He married Jane Elizabeth Cox/Cock (1835-1917) in 1882. George Iden was active in Scipio Monthly Meeting and served as an Elder. The collection contains thirty-four daybooks with daily notes on farm life in the second half of the nineteenth century: crops and livestock, financial accounts, weather, and some personal notes.

Abstract:
George B. Jackson, Swarthmore College Class of 1921, was a New York Quaker businessman. A member of New York Monthly Meeting, he was interested in family history and compiled the collection which contains farm daybooks of his great grandfather James M. Jackson of Quakertown and the memoirs of his grandfather, William Morris Jackson, Quaker businessman, reformer, and Trustee of Swarthmore College. The collection also contains genealogical information on the Jackson, Bacon, Chapin and Morris families, as well as personal correspondence and other papers.

Emily Howland Family Papers, 1763-1929 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Emily Howland (1827-1929) was a Quaker humanitarian and educator who is particularly known for her work with formerly-enslaved African Americans in Virginia during and after the American Civil War. A birthright Friend, Emily Howland was the only daughter of Slocum and Hannah (Tallcot) Howland of Sherwood, N.Y. She was educated locally and for a brief period in Philadelphia, and then moved to Washington, D.C. in 1857 to teach at the Miner School for Freedmen. During the war she worked at a contraband camp in Virginia, establishing a school and coordinating relief activities. She returned to Sherwood after her father's death in 1881 and contributed time and money toward the maintenance of the Sherwood School. She continued her interest in the education of African-Americans in the south, and was also involved in woman suffrage and temperance. John J. Merritt (1804-1871) was a New York City Hicksite Quaker businessman. He was the son of John and Phebe J. Brown and in 1827, married Hannah Brown of Amawalk Monthly Meeting. This collection primarily contains John J. Merritt's correspondence with Hannah Brown during their courtship and after their marriage. The letters describe life in New York City and travel in New York State, Canada, and Michigan.

Abstract:
Edna Postlethwaite (1892-1972) graduated from Swarthmore College in 1914 and earned a masters degree from Columbia University. A Quaker and a member of New York Monthly Meeting of Friends, she was a teacher and involved in many social concerns. The collection contains the letters and diaries of Edna Postlethwaite and photocopies of the letters of G. Edmund Stratton, her uncle, and also a Swarthmore College graduate. Of particular interest is the correspondence of the former with her parents, Clarence E. and Charlotte Lewis Postlethwaite, while she was a student at Swarthmore College.
