Richard Burn sketchbook, 1831-1832 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This oblong, leather-bound sketchbook contains ink drawings by Richard Burn of Lurdenlaw, Kelso, Scotland, and dates from 1831 to 1832. Each page--including the front and back inside covers--are filled with many comical sketches and caricatures, several hunting scenes, some animals, and local Scottish landscapes.

Henry Dundas papers, 1781-1839 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville PC and Baron Dunira (28 April 1742–28 May 1811) was a Scottish lawyer and politician. He was the first Secretary of State for War and the last person to be impeached in the United Kingdom. His son, Robert Dundas, 2nd Viscount (14 March 1771–10 June 1851), was at various times Keeper of the Signet of Scotland, First Lord of the Admiralty, and a member of Parliament. The collection includes correspondence and documents formerly owned by the First and Second Viscounts Melville, Henry Dundas and Robert Dundas. The materials come from the Dundas family archives and consist of ten bound volumes and four boxes of unbound manuscripts. The bulk of the papers relate to British India with a smaller but still substantial subset dealing with Scottish politics, patronage, and pensions. With a few exceptions the collection comprises incoming correspondence and enclosures to Henry and Robert Dundas but not their replies.

Abstract:: Charles William Blum, Jr. (1925-1991), an artist known for magical realism, lived and worked in New York; San Miguel, Mexico; and Spain. His papers, dating from 1925 to 1988, document his personal life through letters, journals, photographs and memorabilia. In particular, Blum's papers cover numerous topics including his work as an artist; his relationships with Robert Davison and Salvatore Saraceno; his opinions on love, romance and homosexuality; expatriate life in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico; and his opinions on the literary, theatrical, and modern dance scenes of the 1950s.

Abstract:: The Marlboro Music School and Festival Records spans Marlboro's history from 1950 through 2013 and showcases its influence on chamber music in America as it documents its growth from a small and informally organized summer school in the early 1950s to its current status as a prestigious institution that has shaped careers and inspired the formation of numerous renowned ensembles. The school's emphasis is on the intensive study of chamber music where young and senior professionals collaborate in a relaxed atmosphere that is removed from the demanding rehearsal and performance schedules that they face throughout the year. The collection comprises administrative documents, concert programs, printed promotional materials, articles and reviews, photographs, and audio-visual materials relating to the Marlboro School of Music and annual summer festival as well as the related Musicians from Marlboro touring series and the Marlboro Recording Society.

Richard Bartlett Gregg papers, 1930-1938 (inclusive) 1930-1933 (bulk)

Abstract:: The Richard Bartlett Gregg papers consist of letters and news reports related to the Indian independence movement collected by the American social philosopher and nonviolence theorist Richard Bartlett Gregg (1885-1974) between 1930 and 1938. Fascinated and inspired by Gandhi, Gregg lived in India from 1925 to 1929. Upon his return to the United States he promoted the nonviolence and simple living exemplified by Gandhi as tools for transforming Western civilization, and kept track of events in India by way of correspondence with Indian leaders and their Western sympathizers and subscriptions to publications supportive of Indian independence. The collection includes handwritten letters to Gregg from prominent Indian guiding lights, including Gandhi, Mahadev Desai, Jivraj Mehta, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mirabehn (Madeleine Slade).

American Musicological Society oral history collection, 1994-2015 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The American Musicological Society, founded in 1943 to promote the systematic study of music, actively documents its history, its members, and, more generally, the history of musicology in North America through its oral history project. This collection contains transcripts, written memoirs, documentation, audio, and video resulting from the oral history project which began in 1996 and continues to the present. Researchers must obtain permission from the American Musicological Society to research the contents of this collection (see Conditions Governing Access note).
