Abstract:: Journals, reports, and surveys written by Harold Chance documenting his visits to and continuing relationships as an AFSC staff member with Evangelical Friends meetings, mostly in the western United States. The collection includes nine journals, 1949-1956, Friends Peace Service evaluation surveys, 1956 & n.d., and a number of miscellaneous reports to Friends Peace Service Council. Among the former is a report on the Second American Conference of Evangelical Friends (1950) and one on the Student Conference on Peace and International Relations (1955).

Josiah P. Marvel papers, 1942-1966 (bulk)

Abstract:: Josiah P. Marvel (1896-1959) was a Quaker, who worked with the American Friends Service Committee in France in 1940-41 and in 1942 became the chairman of the Quaker Emergency Service in New York City. This collection contains primarily Marvel's files on the Quaker Emergency Service, including its Civilian Readjustment Committee (a clinic that offered men arrested for soliciting sex with other men the option of psychiatric care in lieu of a prison sentence). The collection also includes a typescript of Marvel's unpublished memoir, "Peace in our time," and photographs of him.

Stapleton interviews about Courtney Smith, 1991-1999 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection consists of audiocassette tapes of interviews created by Darwin H. and Donna Heckman Stapleton from 1991 to 1999 as research for their 2004 biography, Dignity, Discourse, and Destiny: The Life of Courtney C. Smith. Interviews were conducted with Swarthmore College faculty, staff, students, and Board members, as well as personal friends and family members of Courtney Smith. Courtney Smith (1916-1969) was the 9th president of Swarthmore College, 1953-1969. While a time of great growth and accomplishment, his presidency was marked by increasing tension from anti-war sentiment, pressure to increase the number of African American students, and changing social standards.
