Overview and metadata sections
Helen M. Carroll was active in peace and Quaker organizations throughout her adult life. She was a 1934 graduate of Swarthmore College and was a member of Swarthmore Monthly Meeting. Born in 1912 in Evanston, Illinois, she grew up in Washington D.C. After her graduation from Swarthmore she moved to the Borough. She joined WILPF as a young woman and was also a member of the League of Women Voters, Chair of the Swarthmore (Borough) United Nations Committee, and was a United World Federalist. Carroll was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Miami in 1972. She was also very active in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and served as the Clerk of the Committee on the United Nations for many years. Helen Carroll died in 1997
Helen Carroll's files related to her peace and social concerns, including some material on Swarthmore borough (inc Swarthmore U. N Committee), the PYM U. N.committee, and other Quaker-related papers.
These papers were originally received by the Swarthmore College Peace Collection, and were transferred to Friends Historical Library. SCPC removed the WILPF-related papers before the transfer.
The Helen M. Carroll Papers were donated to Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College in 1998 by Susan Carroll Edwards, daughter of Helen M. Carroll.
Minutes of the United Nations Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting were transferred to RG2/Phy/773 to fill gaps in those minutes during the period in which Helen Carroll was Clerk.
